Manipulating the PD-1 pathway to improve immunity.

Manipulating the PD-1 pathway to improve immunity. Curr Opin Immunol. 2013 Apr 9; Authors: Kamphorst AO, Ahmed R Abstract PD-1 is an inhibitory receptor induced in T cells by antigen stimulation and sustained PD-1 expression plays a key role in T cell dysfunction. Blocking PD-1 signaling rescues exhausted T cells and is an effective treatment for chronic infections and cancer. Nonetheless, combining PD-1 pathway blockade to therapeutic vaccination should further improve T cell rescue. PD-1 is induced shortly after T cell priming, but little is known about the role of PD-1 in the initiation of immune responses. In addition, the PD-1 pathway may also modulate humoral responses, since both B cells and Tfh cells express PD-1. Therefore, even though much progress has been achieved by manipulation of the PD-1 pathway to rescue exhausted T cells, this powerful immunotherapy could still be further exploited. This study sought to gather information pertaining to HPV and cervical cancer risk factors, awareness of HPV and the vaccine, as well as HPV vaccine uptake in female patients presenting to an ED.Methods: We obtained 81 surveys completed by female ED patients. Demographics included age, race, income, insurance status, primary care provider status, and known cervical-cancer risk factors. Subsequent survey questions explored respondents ’ knowledge, familiarity,...

In conclusion, taller body height at the entry to adulthood, supposed to be a marker of early-life environment, is associated with lower risk of dementia diagnosis later in life. The association persisted when adjusted for educational level and intelligence test scores in young adulthood, suggesting that height is not just acting as an indicator of cognitive reserve. A Comparison of Biological Age Measurement Approaches https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2020/02/a-comparison-of-biological-age-measurement-approaches/ Researchers here assess the performance of a range of approaches to measuring biological...

Publication date: April 2020Source: Cancer Epidemiology, Volume 65Author(s): Wei Lin, Lin Zhou, Haiyan Hu, Bin Chen, Shixin Yuan, Bo Wu, Zhihua Liu, Yueyun WangAbstractIt has been reported that the number of children a mother has may impact on her concept of health and behavior, and there is a need to understand the role of children in the acceptability of human papillomavirus (HPV) testing and vaccination among Chinese mothers. A cross-sectional survey was conducted between January and June 2015 in Shenzhen, China, in which representative females were recruited from healthcare institutions through the Cervical Cancer Prev...

This study investigated anal HPV infections and cytological abnormalities among men who have sex with men (MSM). Sociodemographic characteristics and sexual behaviors were collected by using a structured questionnaire. Anal cytological results were examined, and HPV genotyping was performed by the Linear Array HPV Genotyping test. Logistic regression was used to estimate risk factors and their associations with high-risk HPV infection and cytological abnormalities. Among 163 MSM, 101 were seropositive for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and 62 were seronegative for HIV. The overall prevalence of HPV was 66.2%. A total o...

In this study, an attenuated live vector vaccine for Aeromonas hydrophila (AH) named EGDeABdd-dat-ompW was successfully constructed using an attenuated vector named EGDeABdd, in which dal, dat, actA, and inlB genes were deleted from wild-type LM-EGDe. To construct EGDeABdd-dat-ompW, a recombinant plasmid pERL3-dat-ompW obtained by inserting the dat gene from EGDe and outer membrane protein gene ompW from AH into pERL3 plasmid was transformed into EGDeABdd cell. The safety and immunogenicity of EGDeABdd-dat-ompW as an attenuated vector vaccine for delivery of OMPW were assessed through analyzing invasion to Caco-2 cells and...

Authors: Wieland U, Oellig F, Kreuter A Abstract Anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN) and 89-100% of anal cancers are caused by persistent infections with high-risk (HR) human papillomaviruses (HPV). In HIV-positive patients, anal HPV infection and AIN are very common and these patients have a greatly increased risk of developing anal cancer. However, a continuous increase in the incidence of anal cancer has also been observed in the general population in recent decades. AIN can clinically present in diverse manners. In HIV-positive patients AIN can be hidden in condylomas. Furthermore, 3-14% of high-grad...

Viral infection is associated with many types of tumorigenesis, including human papillomavirus (HPV)-induced cervical cancer. The induction of a specific T-cell response against virus-infected cells is desired to develop an efficient therapeutic approach for virus-associated cancer. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) has a long history in the treatment of cancer patients in Asian countries. Hedyotis diffusa Willd (Bai Hua She She Cao, BHSSC) is frequently used clinically and has been shown to inhibit tumor growth in vitro. However, in vivo data demonstrating the antitumor efficacy of BHSSC are still lacking. We showed that BHSS...
