Emerging drugs for the treatment of noninfectious uveitis.

This article discusses existing local and systemic applied treatments for ocular inflammation including corticosteroids, non-biologic, and biologic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARD). Potential drugs being studied in clinical trials are introduced for both local and systemic use. Expert opinion: Treatment options for uveitis continue to expand. AbstractA 71-year-old woman was hospitalized for the treatment of fatigue, fever, and cough. On admission, she showed increased serum inflammation markers, severe anemia, pulmonary hemorrhage, and advanced acute kidney injury requiring hemodialysis. Conclusions: High-quality randomized controlled trials are currently lacking, and the existing literature is predominately not specific to use of 5-FU on the face. These studies, however, suggest that intralesional 5-FU is safe and probably more effective than other options in the management of cutaneous scars in the oculofacial region. The delivery methods, timing, dosing, and concomitant therapies were highly variable. Further high-quality controlled studies specific to oculofacial scars may be indicated to assess the efficacy of 5-FU and to establish the best protocols for administering this medication.

Conclusion: Although Fusarium keratitis remains a rare complication of CL wear, we found a significant increase of cases in the Netherlands. The course of infection may be severe and fungal diagnosis was often delayed. Antifungal treatment strategies varied widely and the treatment failure rate was high, requiring transplantation or even enucleation. Our study underscores the need for systematic surveillance of fungal keratitis and a consensus management protocol.
