Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome following surgical removal of a complete hydatidiform mole: a case report

ConclusionPhysicians should be aware that ovarian cysts can occur and can increase rapidly after abortion of a hydatidiform mole. However, the ovarian cyst can return to its original size spontaneously even if it becomes huge.

Authors: Suo F, Zhong B, Lu F, Dong Z Abstract Glioma is the most aggressive brain tumor and is associated with a high mortality rate. The aim of the present study was to explore the association between matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2) and ephrin type-A receptor 2 (EphA2) expression in glioma cells, and to investigate the contribution of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in glioma classification. A total of 43 patients with pathologically confirmed glioma were divided into two groups as follows: Low-grade (grades I and II; n=21) and high-grade (grades IV and IV; n=22). Subsequently, immunohistochemistry staining w...

Authors: Sheldon RR, Weiss JB, Do WS, Forte DM, Carter PL, Eckert MJ, Sohn VY Abstract INTRODUCTION: Surgery is a known gateway to opioid use that may result in long-term morbidity. Given the paucity of evidence regarding the appropriate amount of postoperative opioid analgesia and variable prescribing education, we investigated prescribing habits before and after institution of a multimodal postoperative pain management protocol. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Laparoscopic appendectomies, laparoscopic cholecystectomies, inguinal hernia repairs, and umbilical hernia repairs performed at a tertiary military medical cent...

CONCLUSIONS: The adaptation process was successful in generating an engaging mindfulness training program that was highly relevant to the military context. Obtaining input from stakeholders, such as military healthcare providers and active-duty soldiers, and iterative feedback and modification, were key to the process. Moreover, the program was designed to maintain the integrity and core elements of MBIs while adapting to military culture. A future randomized controlled trial design will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention in improving chronic pain in military personnel. This program is responsive to ...

Authors: Macomb CV, Evans MO, Dockstater JE, Montgomery JR, Beakes DE Abstract Shoulder injury related to vaccine administration (SIRVA) is defined as "shoulder pain with limited range of motion within 48 hours after vaccine receipt in individuals with no prior history of pain, inflammation, or dysfunction of the affected shoulder before vaccine administration." Corticosteroid injections (CSIs) have been proposed as a reasonable treatment modality for SIRVA, although evidence regarding efficacy is scanty. In this case series, we present two patients diagnosed with SIRVA who received CSI within 5 days of s...

Authors: Hylmarova S, Stechova K, Pavlinkova G, Peknicova J, Macek M, Kvapil M Abstract Little is known about type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) impact on the male sexual and reproductive functions. We aim to evaluate the influence of T1DM on male sexual function, quality of sexual life, and sex hormone levels. A total of 57 male patients aged 18 to 50 years (mean = 33) with T1DM (duration mean = 15 years) had a medical examination and completed a set of questionnaires - International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Sexual quality of life questionnaire male (SQoL-M). The prev...

Authors: Manabe H, Tezuka F, Yamashita K, Sugiura K, Ishihama Y, Takata Y, Sakai T, Maeda T, Sairyo K Abstract For full-endoscopic lumbar discectomy, operating costs are also important because expensive equipment are necessary. We surveyed the operating costs of surgical equipment necessary for full-endoscopic surgery together with surgical procedure reimbursement fees. A total of 295 cases of full-endoscopic surgery via a transforaminal approach were retrospectively analyzed. We calculated the frequency of damage and the unit purchase price of devices such as endoscopes, and surgical instruments such as grasping f...

SeppenAbstractVisceral pain, characterized by abdominal discomfort, originates from organs in the abdominal cavity and is a characteristic symptom in patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome, vulvodynia or interstitial cystitis. Most organs in which visceral pain originates are in contact with the external milieu and continuously exposed to microbes. In order to maintain homeostasis and prevent infections, the immune- and nervous sy...

This study focused on the assessment of the levels of phthalates in the breast-milk and urine samples of lactating mothers using a modified QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe) technique. The extracts obtained with acetonitrile solvent were purified using agricultural materials (spent seedcake of Calophyllum inophyllum, coconut husk (Cocos nucifera) and Moringa oleifera seeds) as dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) absorbents before gas chromatography analyses. The method's performance in terms of purification efficiency and recovery were evaluated before applying the method for the extraction of...
