During the last two decades, the number of breast implants used in aesthetic, oncologic and risk reducing surgery has exponentially increased. Since the identification of the first case of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) more than twenty years ago [1], several cases on this very rare disease have been reported, demonstrating a clear association with breast implants. As a result, the World Health Organization (WHO) recognized BIA-ALCL as a disease associated with excellent outcomes in the 2017 classification of haemato-lymphoid neoplasms [2].

Exclusive: solicitors call for UK ban of textured variety associated with lymphomaAt least 61 women in the UK have been diagnosed with a potentially fatal cancer linked to breast implants, but the type they received continues to be used, with no plans by the regulator to follow France and Australia in banning them.Lawyers for more than 40 of the women, who are bringing legal action against the manufacturers as well as the clinics and doctors who carried out the surgery, say thetextured implants linked toanaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) should be withdrawn from the market. Smooth implants are available instead, which h...

Dr. Hamori recently addressed concerns over BIA-ALCL in this video." ALCL (Anaplastic large cell lymphoma) is a very rare disease, found in approximately one in 30,000 patients. So, while there is a lot of hype about it right now, and while I think it is important that women are aware of it, it is also creating a lot of panic for a disease that is quite uncommon.First of all, it affects only people who have textured implants — implants that have a little pebbling on the outside. The theory is that after seven or eight years contamination can occur, some over reactive immune response occurs, a fluid film for...

Conclusions: Although there exists a need for more comprehensive reporting in federal databases, the information available should be considered for a more complete understanding of implant-associated adverse outcomes. With only 46% of FDA-reported implant-related deaths demonstrated to be truly associated with breast implant use, there exists a need for public awareness and education on breast implant safety.

We report a case of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma in a 70-year old woman, who 21 years previously had undergone bilateral breast augmentation with textured silicone implants. Eleven years later, she had bilateral implant removal with possible implant leak and presence of ‘atypical cells’ in the seroma. She then opted for prophylactic bilateral mastectomy in view of her strong family history of breast cancer and underwent reconstruction with subcutaneous gel implants. Eight months later, the patient noted right breast swelling and peri-implant effusion. The cytology was suspicious fo...

Two German companies have paired up on the development of a technology that could disrupt the breast implant market. BellaSeno will use Evonik's Resomer bioresorbable polymer in its Senella breast scaffolds with a proprietary additive manufacturing process that avoids the use of silicone implants, some of which have raised major safety concerns. BellaSeno plans to begin first-in-human clinical trials of the Senella scaffolds with Resomer in Germany this quarter. Evonik has agreed to supply its Resomer polymer for clinical and commercial use. The scaffolds are designed to guide the growth of natural tissue using the patient...

AbstractPurpose of ReviewThe US Food and Drug Administration issued a recall of textured breast implants in July 2019 secondary to their association with anaplastic large cell lymphoma. This brief review serves to summarize what is actually known about breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma.Recent FindingsSince the FDA ’s first preliminary report in 2011, there have been a reported worldwide total of 573 breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) cases, including 33 deaths. In addition to halting the implantation of textured implants, the July recall served to increase aware...

(CNN) — The US Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday released draft guidance recommending a “boxed warning” on labeling materials for breast implants. Boxed warnings, which alert health care providers and consumers to serious risks associated with a drug or device, are the strongest form of warning required by the FDA for labeling. An example of the boxed warning states that “breast implants are not considered lifetime devices” and “breast implants have been associated with the development of a cancer of the immune system called breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphom...

Seminars in Plastic Surgery 2019; 33: 270-278 DOI: 10.1055/s-0039-1696998Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is an emerging and indolent, but potentially fatal cancer of the immune system that can develop around textured-surface breast implants. The World Health Organization first recognized BIA-ALCL as a unique clinical entity in 2016. To date, over 600 confirmed cases have been reported worldwide. BIA-ALCL most commonly presents with disease confined to the capsule, as a seroma or a mass adjacent to the implant. While BIA-ALCL has a fairly indolent clinical course, with an excellent progno...
