Molecular typing of Giardia duodenalis in cattle, sheep and goats in an arid area of central Iran.

This study provides the first insight into Giardia infection in slaughtered livestock in Iran. Although the prevalence of infection with Giardia in this hot-arid area of Iran was low, educating people about direct contact with livestock such as farmers and abattoirs workers about this zoonotic infection is important. In this study, frequency of different assemblages ofG. duodenalis was determined in sheep and goats bygdh gene and PCR-RFLP method. Same of other studies, assemblage E was dominant genotype in sheep and goats. Isolation of zoonotic assemblages as AI, AII, and BIII showed that sheep and goats should be considered as a source for human infection.

In this study, a total of 89 wild rats were captured. In this study, 50 stool samples were collected from human cases of G. lamblia. referred to health centers in Sari, Babol, Nowshahr cities.
