North Carolina Paramedic Loses Leg After Crash

Paramedic Heather Haynes speaks to WGHP-TV from her hospital bed after losing part of her leg after being hit. LEXINGTON, N.C – A paramedic pinned between an ambulance and car last month lost part of her leg in the crash but is not giving up hope. "I want to keep going, because, first of all, I didn't go through paramedic school for two years for nothing, and because I have four kids looking at me," Heather Haynes said in a video message to WGHP-TV from her hospital bed. "If I give up, then it's going to teach them that you just give up no matter what. So, I'm just going to keep going, and, as soon as I can, I'm going to be back to work." The station reports Haynes underwent six surgeries after the crash, including one to remove part of her leg. The driver accused of hitting her, 36-year-old Nathan Fowler, allegedly drove into the cement barriers blocking a Walmart after the initial crash. He was taken into custody in the sporting goods section. Fowler was charged with careless and reckless driving, DWI, hit and run and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on emergency personnel. A GoFund meanwhile has raised $4,500 as of Friday afternoon for Haynes. She told the station she hopes to start rehab soon.
