A 46-year-old woman with a history of sickle cell disease and associated predialysis stage V chronic kidney disease (CKD) with secondary hyperparathyroidism presented with fever, severe extremity pain, and perioral numbness. On examination, she had a prominent Chvostek ’s sign, carpopedal spasm, hyperactive tendon reflexes, and a nontender mass in the left lobe of her thyroid gland. She was not on bisphosphonates or calcimimetics and had not been taking her prescribed calcitriol for 2 weeks.

This study examines the embodied experience of 68 women who sought abortion services in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Social stigma and restrictive abortion laws were major barriers to care at the time of study, providing the opportunity to explore the ways biological, social, and structural factors shape embodiment. We present the case of a 5-year-old female who developed compartment syndrome of her left foot 26 hours after sustaining an isolated crush injury to the distal forefoot. Her treatment included emergent fasciotomy in combination with 20 hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatments. The progression of her acute digital ischemia was monitored by using serial fluorescence microangiography studies performed at 17 hours, 7 days, and 3 weeks postinjury.
