ConclusionOur hypothesis that IH would decrease EE was not corroborated. However, IH and normoxic recovery seem to promote severity-dependent enlargement of visceral adipocytes, likely reflecting altered energy preservation mechanisms induced by IH.

Treatment TermsSleep disorders Overview People with obstructive sleep apnea who haven ’t found relief may benefit from a new pacemaker-like device that keeps the airway open during sleep. When other options have failed, “this treatment has allowed us to achieve a whole new level of success,” said Matthew Ellison, MD, an otolaryngologist at Duke, the first center in North Caroli na to implant the Inspire hypoglossal nerve stimulator system. ConclusionAlthough preoperative characteristics in PP (e.g., lower BMI and AHI) seem to be in favor for higher surgical success compared to NPP, it remains unclear whether position-dependency is a predictor for surgical outcome. It is suggested that the largest differences and expected preoperative and postoperative changes occur in non-supine AHI. In PP, the preoperative non-supine AHI is already lower compared to NPP suggesting a lower chance of surgical success in PP.

This study was to investigate the degree of susceptibility to intermittent hypoxia (IH), a hallmark of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), between the two mice inbred lines C57BL/6N (6N) and C57BL/6J (6J).Materials and methodsFour-week old male mice of 6N and 6J substrains (n = 8) were randomized to standard diet (SD) group or high fat (HF) diet group. At the age of 13-week, all two groups of mice were subjected to either air or IH (IH30; thirty hypoxic events per hour) for one week.Key findingsAll mice fed with HF diet exhibited obesity with more body weight and fat mass (percentage to body weight) gain. IH reduced serum L...

The objectives of this study were to explore associations between OSA severity using the apnea-hypopnea-index(AHI) and obstructive apnea-hypopnea-index(OAHI) on polysomnography (PSG), OSA symptoms, and measures of hypertension in children with CKD.MethodsOne-night in-laboratory PSGs and 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) were performed on children with CKD stages 2 –5 (non-dialysis dependent). Sleep questionnaires, including the modified Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and the Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire (PSQ), were administered during the sleep study.ResultsNineteen children and adolescents completed ...

Abstract Clinical studies have shown that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) increases atherosclerosis risk. The inflammation, especially mediated by the macrophages via nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), has been speculated to contribute to atherogenicity in OSA patients. Inhibitor of NF-κB kinase subunit beta (IKKβ) is an essential element of NF-κB pathway and is linked to atherosclerosis. We previously reported that atherosclerosis was accelerated in pulmonary artery (PA) but not in aorta when low-density lipoprotein receptor knockout (Ldlr-/-) mice were exposed to intermittent hypoxia/hypercapni...
