Identification of the clinically most relevant postoperative complications after gastrectomy: a population-based cohort study

ConclusionSurgical improvement programs should focus on preventing or managing anastomotic leakage and pulmonary complications, since these complications have the greatest overall impact on clinical outcomes after gastrectomy.

AbstractThe Japanese guideline for gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumor treatment recommends everolimus or sunitinib as first-line treatment for unresectable pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs). Streptozocin (STZ) is recommended as an alternative. We encountered a patient with PNET who had multiple liver metastases and who showed a remarkable response to third-line STZ. The patient was a 50-year-old man with a pancreatic head tumor 32  mm in diameter. We planned to perform subtotal stomach-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy, but abandoned resecting the pancreas during the surgery upon discovering a small l...

All cs-mucin family members have structural features that enable them to act as a releasable decoy barrier to mucosal pathogens, by providing ligands for pathogen binding and the ability to shed the bound extracellular domain. Due ...

ConclusionsWe report the pathology and computed tomography imaging characteristics of a case of calcified mucinous adenocarcinoma of the stomach metastatic to the iris, including findings at autopsy. Metastatic carcinomas in the iris originating in the stomach are exceedingly rare. Multiple punctate calcifications were present in pools of extracellular mucin, a diagnostic clue for mucinous adenocarcinoma. Possible mechanisms underlying scattered punctuate calcifications in gastric mucinous adenocarcinoma warrant further investigation.

This report presents key information on the basis for Food and Drug Administration approval of pembrolizumab for the treatment of patients with locally advanced or metastatic gastric or GEJ adenocarcinoma whose tumors express PD‐L1. The report discusses the basis for limiting the indication to patients with PD‐L1‐expressing tumors and the basis for recommending that PD‐L1 status be assessed using a fresh tumor specimen if PD‐L1 expression is not detected in an archival gastric or GEJ cancer specimen.

A 65-year-old male patient who had been hospitalized in the ıntensive care unit for pneumonia presented with hematemesis and melena. He was diagnosed with metastatic adenocarcinoma of prostate (multiple bone and lung metastases), which was accompanied by diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and coronary heart disease. The hemoglobin levels decreased from 11.4 g /dL to 7.3 g/dL during follow-up. Upper endoscopy revealed widespread distribution of numerous umbilicated nodules with varying sizes (from 0.5 to 2 cm) on gastric mucosa (A, B, C).
