CONCLUSION: DAS28 score and disease activity are strong indicators of TMJ affection in RA patients when compared to RF and ACCP. Conclusions: NaF-PET/CT scan appears to be a valuable imaging approach in evaluating the metabolic activity in osseous structures of the TMJ in RA patients. The degree of NaF uptake in the TMJ correlated with biochemical parameters of disease severity based on DAS28-CPR and DAS28-ESR scores.

Conclusions: RA patients appear to have significantly higher metabolic activity in the TMJ than age/ gender matched healthy control subjects. Our results illustrate the potential value of using FDG-PET/CT for evaluation of TMJ disorders and suggest that this modality may be applied for monitoring effects of treatment regimens.

ConclusionFor the first time, using the K/BxN model we could demonstrate that, due to its anatomical and mechanical conditions, the temporomandibular joint seems to be less susceptible to the initiation of RA compared to limb joints. Therefore, additional investigations are needed on other arthritis models as well, in order to further improve our understanding of the pathogenesis and defense mechanisms of the disease.
