The Pitfall of Utilizing a Commercial Biochemical Yeast Identification Kit to Detect. Candida auris. Ann Clin Lab Sci. 2019 Sep;49(4):546-549 Authors: Ding CH, Situ SF, Steven A, Razak MFA Abstract Candida auris is an emerging pathogenic yeast responsible for nosocomial infections with high mortality, on a global scale. A 65-year-old woman with hypovolemic shock and severe metabolic acidosis was intubated and admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Shortly after admission, she developed ventilator-associated pneumonia caused by multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii, which necessitated treatment with high-dose ampicillin-sulbactam. Two weeks later, a yeast was cultured from her blood. It formed pale pink colonies on CHROMagar Candida medium and produced predominantly oval budding yeast cells with the occasional rudimentary pseudohyphae on cornmeal agar. ID 32 C identified the yeast as Candida sake However, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and sequencing of the D1/D2 region of the 28S rRNA gene identified the yeast as C. auris. In conclusion, to best of our knowledge these findings are the first report of isolation of 4-bromophenol and Bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate from genus Nocardiopsis, thus suggesting that rare actinomycetes are promising source of therapeutically important bioactive metabolites.

Authors: Bassetti M, Giacobbe DR, Peghin M, Irani P Abstract Introduction: Antimicrobial resistance poses a substantial threat to global public health concern, since it decreases the probability of effectively treating an infection and increases risk of morbidity and mortality. Areas covered: In this review, the authors discuss the advantages and disadvantages of classical and novel trial designs for evaluating novel antibiotics for infections due to multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO). An inductive literature search was performed using different keywords pertinent to the reviewed topics. Expert opinion: The need ...

Full resolution usually occurs with appropriate antimicrobial therapy. A significant proportion of patients develop severe CAP where there is failure to contain the local immune response and these patients may require admission to the intensive care unit (ICU). The CURB-65 severity score is a rapid, objective way of predicting mortality and ca...
