Outcomes of subsequent pregnancies in patients following treatment of cesarean scar pregnancy with high intensity focused ultrasound followed by ultrasound-guided dilation and curettage.

Conclusion: HIFU followed by USg-D&C is an effective and safe treatment for patients with CSP who wish to conceive. Prospective multi-center studies with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up periods are needed to compare this treatment with others. PMID: 31466485 [PubMed - in process]

Over 30 million people in the United States live with diabetes, and approximately 7.7 million people have diabetic retinopathy, making it the most common cause of vision loss in working-aged adults. The prevalence of diabetic retinopathy has increased significantly over the past 20 years, due to the rise in the number of people diagnosed with diabetes. How does diabetes affect the retina? The retina is the light-sensing component located in the back of the eye. It is composed of blood vessels, nerve cells (neurons), and specialized cells called photoreceptors that are involved in directly sensing light. The ability of the ...

AbstractIntroductionThe study was conducted to assess the safety and efficacy of a combined oral contraceptive, YAZ, containing 3  mg drospirenone/20 μg ethinyl estradiol administered in a 24/4 regimen.MethodsThis was a single-arm, open-label, interventional, post-authorization safety surveillance study of YAZ across 6 treatment cycles. Primary objective was assessing its safety profile in Chinese women. Secondary objectives included assessing contraceptive efficacy, cycle control, and bleeding patterns among subjects with and without preceding abortion, along with efficacy in moderate acne vulgaris. Subgroup ...

Abstract BACKGROUND: To evaluate maternal and neonatal outcomes of assisted reproductive technology (ART). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pregnant women registered from 2015 through 2017 (n = 6994) at five perinatal centers that managed high-risk pregnancies in Mie, Japan, retrospectively. Rates of preterm birth (

Conclusion: Checking for hemostasis after placing a pressure pack for 5-10 minutes over an extraction socket is a useful act of risk management before discharge of the patient from the clinic to rule out any hemorrhagic tendency.

Akkök ÇA Abstract BACKGROUND: Individuals with the K0 phenotype are extremely rare. They may develop anti-Ku antibodies, which react with all antigens of the Kell blood group system, thereby leading to haemolytic transfusion reactions and haemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn. CASE PRESENTATION: A primigravida who was transfused with one unit of red blood cells due to iron deficiency anaemia developed anti-Ku antibodies. The pregnancy was closely monitored by ultrasound and antibody titres. Maternal autologous blood collection was performed twice during the last trimester as back-up in case...

AbstractPulmonary arteriovenous malformation (PAVM) is a potential cause of hemothorax. The risk of PAVM rupture is reported to be higher during pregnancy for several reasons, including increased body fluid and a change in hormonal conditions. A 34-year-old pregnant woman suddenly felt right chest pain and dyspnea in the 28th week of gestation. Chest X-ray and computed tomography showed massive right pleural effusion. Her vital signs gradually deteriorated with hemorrhagic shock, necessitating emergency surgery. During exploratory thoracoscopy, active bleeding from the middle lobe was noticed and gauze packing was required...

Complete plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) deficiency is a very rare genetic disorder that is associated with an increased risk of bleeding diathesis. Patients with PAI-1 deficiency are also known to be at increased risk for massive postpartum hemorrhage. We discuss one such rare case of PAI-1 deficiency in a young pregnant patient at 22 weeks of gestation with history of prolonged bleeding. Tranexamic acid was administered for menorrhagia and resumed later for labor and continued into the postpartum period since antifibrinolytics have been the mainstay in the management of PAI-1 deficiency. The patient delivered a...

Heparin-based anticoagulation for venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis in pregnant/postpartum women is not without potential risk. We compared measures of postpartum bleeding and resource utilization before and after adoption of a risk-based VTE prophylaxis protocol.

Placental abruption and placenta previa account for the majority of bleeding in the third trimester. We hypothesized that women diagnosed with both previa and abruption in the same pregnancy would have higher rates of pregnancy complications compared to women with either previa or abruption. We tested this hypothesis in a large cohort of delivery hospitalizations in the US.
