Comment on: Acute and longer-term body composition changes after bariatric surgery

“How many calories should I eat?” This question is heard regularly by clinicians practicing in the field of bariatric surgery. If one is to honor the complexity of human metabolism, the question does not have a simple answer. Yet a quick search through bariatric surgery message boards and online resources will reveal that patients are given one anyway, and without regard to their body size, sex, age, physical activity level, or weight history. Many patients are told to eat a very low calorie, low carbohydrate, high protein diet after surgery and are typically given calorie range goals of 5 00 to 1000 per day for the first 6 months, and no more than 1300-1500 for life.
