Authors: Iyer KS, Dayal S Abstract Platelets are small, anucleated effector cells that play an important role in linking the hemostatic and inflammatory processes in the body. Platelet function is known to be altered under various inflammatory conditions including aging. A gain in platelet function during aging can increase the risk of thrombotic events, such as stroke and acute myocardial infarction. Anti-platelet therapy is designed to reduce risk of serious cerebrovascular and cardiovascular events, but the adverse consequences of therapy, such as risk for bleeding increases with aging as well. Age-associated co...

This study determined, if increased intrauterine oxidative stress (IUOx) affects adiposity, glucose and cholesterol metabolism in adult Ldlr−/−xSod2+/+ offspring from crossing male Ldlr−/−xSod2+/+ mice with Ldlr−/−xSod2 ± dams (IUOx) or Ldlr−/−xSod2 ± males with Ldlr−/−xSod2+/+ dams (control). At 12 weeks of age mice received Western diet for an additional 12 weeks. Adult male IUOx offspring displayed lower body weight and reduced adiposity associated with improved glucose tolerance compared to controls. Reduced weight gain in IUO...

Publication date: Available online 17 September 2019Source: PeptidesAuthor(s): Vincent MarksAbstractThis paper describes the early history of Gastric Inhibitory Polypeptide, better referred to simply as GIP, from its isolation by purification from a crude preparation of CCK-PZ (cholecystokinin/pancreozymin) to its recognition as a key play in the pathogenesis of obesity and other metabolic disorders far removed from the enterogastrone properties by which it was originally identified. Augmentation of glucose mediated insulin release, the incretin effect, was discovered soon after GIP was first isolated and only much later w...

Authors: Johnston MP, Patel J, Byrne CD Abstract Introduction The pandemic of obesity over the last two decades has triggered a rise in prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NAFLD is associated with liver-related- and cardiovascular complications. Despite this, the first licensed drug for NAFLD is yet to be approved. Given the scale of the problem and unmet needs, there is a myriad of agents in the development pipeline. Areas covered We discuss promising agents in early phase clinical trials and categorize these agents based on their action on steatosis, steatohepatitis and fibrosis. Furthermore,...

ConclusionsThe incidence of VTE complications after endovenous laser ablation was low. Furthermore, the value of performing postoperative ultrasound for VTE management seems to be low because the occurrence of severe VTE complications could not be predicted by lower extremity venous ultrasound. Although the perioperative detection of VTE complications by this modality resulted in the early administration of anticoagulant therapy and may have contributed to improved prognosis, the number of those patients was limited.
