Since long-term response to chemotherapy in those leukemias is relatively good, allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is considered in patients who relapse and achieve second complete remission. To evaluate the outcomes of allogeneic transplantation in this indication, we studied 631 patients in reported to the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation Registry between the years 2000 and 2014. Leukemia-free survival probabilities at 2 and 5 years were 59.1% and 54.1%, while overall survival probabilities were 65% and 58.2% respectively. Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a malignant, hyperproliferative neoplasm. Since its inception, chemotherapy and hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplantation have substantially improved the outcome of AML, but high rate of relapsed and refractory (R/R) AML remain the major obstacles in clinical treatment.
