Characterization of mechanical and barrier properties of bacterial cellulose, glycerol and polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) composite films with eco-friendly UV-protective properties

Publication date: Available online 21 August 2019Source: Food HydrocolloidsAuthor(s): Patricia Cazón, Gonzalo Velazquez, Manuel VázquezAbstractHighly flexible composite films based on bacterial cellulose, glycerol and polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) with UV barrier properties were developed. The open nanoscale network of bacterial cellulose allowed to combine it with glycerol and polyvinyl alcohol by immersion. This procedure kept intact the bacterial cellulose structure. The interactions among bacterial cellulose, glycerol and PVOH were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry analysis. In general, the addition of PVOH reinforced the bacterial cellulose matrix meanwhile glycerol showed a significant plasticizing behaviour. Formulations with PVOH and glycerol reached a maximum value of 49.89% of elongation and a good resistance to rupture of 13.78 MPa. The water vapour permeability ranged from 1.87·10−11 to 2.04·10−10 g/m s Pa. The UV-VIS spectral analysis showed that glycerol decreased the transmittance in the UV area and polyvinyl alcohol enhanced the transparency values of the samples in the VIS region. The transmittance in the UV-A, UV-B and UV-C areas for films based on bacterial cellulose with glycerol reached up to 5.59, 2.4 and 0.57%, respectively.Graphical abstract

In this study, the ecotoxicity and surface activity of the composites of anionic surfactant sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) and nonionic surfactant fatty alcohol-polyoxyethylene ether (AEO) in various mass ratios were assessed, and the correlation between ideal application properties and safe ecological perspective of the composites was explored. The ecotoxicity of individual SDBS, AEO, and SDBS/AEO mixtures was determined using the bioluminescence inhibition assay with Photobacterium phosphoreum, and the critical micelle concentrations (CMC) were measured by surface tension method and steady-state fluorescence spec...

lid Anwer The current research work proposed the solubility data and solution thermodynamic properties of the cardiovascular agent 6-phenylpyridazin-3(2H)-one [PPD] in twelve pharmaceutical solvents at “T = 298.2 K to 318.2 K” and “p = 0.1 MPa”. The measured solubilities of PPD were regressed well with “van’t Hoff and Apelblat models”. The solid phases of pure and equilibrated PPD were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry and powder X-ray differactometry, and the results suggested no transformation of PPD into solvates/hydrates/polym...

Abstract BACKGROUND: While many adolescents exhibit risky behavior, teenagers with a family history (FH+) of an alcohol use disorder (AUD) are at a heightened risk for earlier initiation of alcohol use, a more rapid escalation in frequency and quantity of alcohol consumption and developing a subsequent AUD in comparison to youth without such family history (FH-). Neuroanatomically, developmentally normative risk-taking behavior parallels an imbalance between more protracted development of the pre-frontal cortex (PFC) and earlier development of limbic regions. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) derived volumetric pro...

Abstract Proteomics was exploited to assess the nature of possible traces of vomit found on the scene of an alleged sexual assault. In the case in point, a woman reported to the police to be raped five days before by a cousin of hers in his car. The woman declared she had vomited in the car before fainting definitely, due to alcohol or possible drugs covertly slipped in her drinks. The suspect confirmed the sexual intercourse, but he claimed consensual sex while the woman was fully conscious. To establish consent and hence subsistence of the crime, the Magistrate requested toxicological analyses on items sampled f...

RainaAbstractComposite films of polyvinyl alcohol dispersed in ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) matrix are fabricated by using Langmuir–Blodgett technique. Pressure–area isotherms show that the composite system formed well aligned monolayer as compared to undoped FLC. Due to molecular interactions, monolayers and multilayers possess good spreading properties and we are able to transfer them onto solid substrates from air-liquid interface. FTIR spectroscopy was used to examine ...

The objective of this research is to prepare filaments containing dronedarone hydrochloride, a drug used in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. Filaments and 3D-printed tablets were subjected to characterization methods in order to prove and ensure the stability of the API and preservation of the drug content. Blends containing different proportions of dronedarone hydrochloride (DNR), polyethylene glycol (PEG), and polyvinyl alcohol filament (PVA) were prepared in two forms: as a powder mixture and as a solid dispersion. Thermogravimetric analysis was conducted, and the thermal properties of the components and polymer bl...

In this study, the mole-fraction solubility data for telmisartan in dichloromethane + primary alcohol (methanol, ethanol, n-propanol or n-butanol) mixtures were measured at five different temperatures by employing a solid-liquid equilibrium using the shake-flask technique. In addition, the melting temperature and enthalpy of telmisartan were determined by differential scanning calorimetry, while powder X-ray diffraction analysis was used to evaluate the crystal form of telmisartan obtained before and after the solubility experiments. The solid state characterization confirmed no transformation of telmisartan into polym...

AbstractIntroductionLow birthweight is associated with diseases later in life. The mechanisms for these associations are not well known. If the hypothesis concerning “maternal constraint” is correct for humans, as shown in animal experiments, we expect the maternal, not paternal, body proportions to influence antenatal growth and those of both parents to influence postnatal growth. We aimed to study the effect of maternal and paternal height and weight on fe tal femur length antenatal (gestational weeks 20 and 30) and body length and weight at birth and postnatal (12 and 24 months old) in both sexes.Material an...

Abstract Biodiesel appears to be a possible substitute for non-renewable fossil fuels; however, its production requires the presence of a catalyst to accelerate the reaction. Serving the purpose of finding effective, cheap and environmentally safe, heterogeneous catalysts, this research used the fig leaves in three different forms, calcined, activated by KOH, and activated by both K2CO3 and CaCO3. Their efficiency in biodiesel synthesis, from spent cooking oil, was examined and compared with that of activated carbon which has been previously investigated. The properties of different catalyst forms were specified u...

In this study, a series of multifunctional PVA/HLC/SA composite hydrogels with air permeability, anti-protein absorption, bacterial barrier property and hemostasis activity were synthesized in the prospect of producing wound dressings by repeated freeze-thawing of poly (vinyl alcohol), Human-like collagen (HLC) and sodium alginate (SA) with Tween80 added as porogen. Infrared spectrometry (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) clarified its homogeneous porous and interconnected internal structures. In addition, the hydrogels were characterized statistically and in vivo full-thickness defects in rabbit was done to ve...
