Progress Toward Poliomyelitis Eradication - Afghanistan, January 2018-May 2019.
This report describes polio eradication activities and progress in Afghanistan during January 2018-May 2019 and updates previous reports (2,3). During May-December 2018, insurgent groups (antigovernment elements) banned house-to-house vaccination in most southern and southeastern provinces, leaving approximately 1 million children inaccessible to oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) administration. During January-April 2019, vaccination targeting children at designated community sites (site-to-site vaccination) was permitted; however, at the end of April 2019, vaccination campaigns were banned nationally. During 2018, a total of 21 WPV1 cases were reported in Afghanistan, compared with 14 during 2017. During January-May 2019, 10 WPV1 cases were reported (as of May 31), compared with eight during January-May 2018. Sewage sample-testing takes place at 20 sites in the highest-risk areas for poliovirus circulation; 17 have detected WPV1 since January 2017, primarily in the southern and eastern provinces. Continued discussion with antigovernment elements to resume house-to-house campaigns is important to achieving polio eradication in Afghanistan. To increase community support for vaccination, collaboration among humanitarian service agencies to address other urgent health and basic needs is critical. PMID: 31437144 [PubMed - in process]
AbstractNearly 20 years after the year 2000 target for global wild poliovirus (WPV) eradication, live polioviruses continue to circulate with all three serotypes posing challenges for the polio endgame. We updated a global differential equation ‐based poliovirus transmission and stochastic risk model to include programmatic and epidemiological experience through January 2020. We used the model to explore the likely dynamics of poliovirus transmission for 2019–2023, which coincides with a new Global Polio Eradication Initiative Strategi c Plan. The model stratifies the global population into 72 blocks, each containi...
[ANGOP] Luanda -At least five million children were vaccinated in the country in 2019 to fight poliomyelitis during the campaigns promoted by the Ministry of Health, said last Friday in Luanda, the minister S ílvia Lutucuta.

ConclusionsReceiving the birth dose is positively associated with up-to-date status later in childhood, highlighting the importance of starting vaccination early. The association is insensitive to confounding by factors observed in National Immunization Survey-Child, but investigation of unobserved factors such as vaccine hesitancy could provide critical information to guide intervention strategy.
Abstract Current inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) products are sensitive to both freezing and elevated temperatures and therefore must be shipped and stored between 2 °C and 8 °C, a requirement that imposes financial and logistical challenges for global distribution. As such, there is a critical need for a robust, thermally stable IPV to support global polio eradication and post-eradication immunization needs. Here, we present the development of air-dried thin films for temperature stabilization of IPV using the biomaterial silk fibroin. Thin-film product compositions were optimized for physical p...
We present an alternative, societal framework for economic evaluations that encompasses a broader set of socioeconomic benefits in addition to health benefits. Quantifying a more comprehensive taxonomy of PCV’s benefits will help to address potential undervaluation and may be sufficient not only to justify recommendation and reimbursement but also to stimulate efforts and investment toward closing coverage gaps.
Abstract Insulin quality and efficacy determine glycemic control, which determines quality of life for people with diabetes. Insulin efficacy is reduced by heat exposure, especially in tropical climates, remote areas, and with improper handling. Insulin doses can be adjusted based on blood glucose monitoring, which may compensate for lack of viability. However, a measured response may be difficult with other biopharmaceuticals. Thermochromic vial monitor technology developed for oral polio vaccines (vaccine vial monitors) is an inexpensive, easily available, visible modality which can be used for insulin and other...
