Home-Based Video Telemedicine for Dementia Management.

Conclusions: Persons with dementia and their families were willing to enroll in an in-home telemedicine clinic. Satisfaction with home visits was high and equal to in-clinic visits. Clinical implications: Video telemedicine is a promising dementia service delivery model for rural patients and others for whom travel to a specialty clinic is burdensome. The objective of the current study was to investigate the change in IPS and attention during head-up tilt (HUT) in patients with NOH compared to controls. Cognitive function was assessed in the supine and HUT positions using the symbol digit modalities test (SDMT) which assesses IPS and the Stroop Test which measures attention. 40 participants completed the study, 20 controls (age 64.50 ± 9.25) and 20 NOH patients (age 69.55 ± 7.43) with associated conditions of Parkinson's disease (n = 11), multiple systems atrophy (n = 3), early Lewy body dementia (n = 1) and idiopathic NOH (n = 5). ...

CONCLUSIONS: Atrophy of the DGM structures, especially the thalamus and caudate nucleus, is related to cognitive impairment in AD. DGM atrophy is associated with tests reflecting both subcortical and cortical cognitive functions. PMID: 31514198 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

DISCUSSION: Data demonstrate that ASD behaviors may seem de novo of degenerative dementia and such behaviors are more prevalent in those with early onset dementia. Further work elucidating a connection between ASD and dementia could shed light on subclinical forms of ASD, identify areas of shared neuroanatomic involvement between ASD and dementias, and provide valuable insights that might hasten the development of therapeutic strategies. CONCLUSIONS: Our results support the consensus that the R47H variant is significantly associated with AD. However, we did not find evidence for association of the R47H variant with other neurodegenerative diseases. PMID: 31513029 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

I thought dementia was all about losing myself, but I have found sides to me I never knew I hadIt was at work where I noticed my first symptoms. I was a non-clinical team leader training matrons and sisters in the art of electronic rostering. My girls called me a workaholic. My brilliant memory, the thing I relied on most, started letting me down badly. Simple words failed me in meetings, the names of colleagues I ’d worked with for years were suddenly a mystery. I used to take long runs by the river to unwind, but my brain stopped communicating with my legs and I started having falls. I knew somehow that things were...

DISCUSSIONWhereas some AD biomarkers showed to be associated with affective symptoms in AD, most evidence was inconsistent. This is likely due to differences in study design or heterogeneity in affective symptoms. Directions for future research are given.

Background/Objectives: Pneumonia readmissions have significant quality of care and policy implications for patients and health care providers. Research indicates that initiatives to decrease readmissions should target high-risk subgroups. Older adults with dementia have an increased risk of pneumonia and subsequent hospitalizations, suggesting that they may be at high-risk of pneumonia readmissions. The purpose of this study was to determine if associations between patient factors and readmission rates differ for older adults with and without dementia who were hospitalized for pneumonia. Design: This was a retrospecti...
