Cohort Profile: The OsteoLaus study

Profile in a nutshellOsteoLaus is an ongoing prospective population-based cohort studying bone health in the postmenopausal women in Lausanne, Switzerland. It aims to contribute to the early and accurate identification of increased fracture risk and to the development of strategies for optimizing bone health care in elderly women. OsteoLaus is nested to the CoLaus cohort.Data were collected during the baseline (March 2010-December 2012) (n = 1475), first follow-up (September 2012-June2015) (n = 1349) and second follow-up (March 2015-February 2018) (n = 1234) visits at the Centre for Bone Diseases, Lausanne University Hospital, Lausanne, Switzerland. The mean follow-up period for each visit is 2.5 years, and the study is projected to have at least four follow-up visits. The study has comprehensive bone assessments for potential fracture or osteoporosis risk factors, including: data on anthropometrics; body composition; physical function; full body, lumbar spine and hip dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA); trabecular bone score; hip structural analysis; and fracture risk assessment (FRAX). Social, genetic and biological data were collected for all OsteoLaus participants during their CoLaus visit, and psychological or sleep data were collected for OsteoLaus subgroups during other nested studies of CoLaus.OsteoLaus is in continuous collaborations with international cohorts and always open for new collaborations.
