Conclusion: Specific contexts appeared to be associated with problematic drinking for both sexes. Among both men and women, "social drinking" was associated with problematic drinking. Both "home drinking" (men) and "daytime drinking" (women) contexts, were associated with problematic drinking and depressive symptoms. Targeted alcohol-focused interventions need to address co-occurring mental health issues. PMID: 31519127 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Abstract The effect of solvent composition on the uv-visible spectrum of methyl orange was investigated for application to the quantitative determination of ethanol. At fixed pH, there was a hypsochromic shift of the absorbance band of methyl orange with increasing ethanol concentration. Using acetate buffer at pH 3.40 the change of absorbance at 530 nm of a solution of methyl orange containing known concentrations of standard ethanol was measured to provide a calibration curve. In order to apply this method to the analysis of alcoholic samples, such as distilled spirits, blended spirits and liquid herbal med...

This study reports a simple and efficient method for the simultaneous determination of Cd, Mn, Pb, and Sb at trace levels in gasoline samples by discrete sample introduction in inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), employing the extraction induced by microemulsion breaking as a sample preparation method. In this work, a microemulsion was formed by mixing 0.7 mL of the gasoline sample with 0.28 mL of ethanol and 0.02 mL of 7 mol L-1 HNO3 solution. Afterwards, 0.1 mL of ultrapure water was added to induce microemulsion breaking. This lead to the formation of two different phases: (i) a top organi...

This article summarizes preclinical and clinical data on the efficacy and safety of the liver targeted ACC inhibitor GS-0976 (Firsocostat) for the treatment of NASH. In a phase 2 trial that included 126 patients with NASH and fibrosis, GS-0976 20 mg daily for 12 weeks showed significant relative reduction in liver fat by 29%; however, treatment was associated with an increase in plasma triglycerides with 16 patients having levels> 500 mg/dL. Expert Opinion: Preclinical and preliminary clinical data support the development of GS-0976 as treatment for NASH. ACC-induced hypertriglyceridemia can be mitigated by fish oil or ...

Ulmus minor bark (UMB) is one of the medicinal plants used in Persian folklore as a fertility enhancer. In the current study, we aimed to elucidate the effect of UMB hydro-alcoholic extract on histological parameters and testosterone condition in an experimental model of PCOS rats. METHODS: Thirty female rats were randomly divided into five groups: (1) control, (2) v...

Publication date: Available online 14 September 2019Source: Reactive and Functional PolymersAuthor(s): Julien Muller, Benedicte Prelot, Jerzy Zajac, Sophie MongeAbstractThe present contribution aims at reporting the synthesis and the preliminary evaluation of hybrid materials combining polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) functionalized with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as complexing groups, and alumina that, together, were able to efficiently complex and remove metallic cations from aqueous effluents. For such purpose, well-defined PVA homopolymers bearing an azide (PVAN3) or an alkyne function (PVA-alkyne) were functionaliz...

encio Pilar Carrasco-Garrido The aims of this study were: (a) to estimate time trends in the prevalence of the co-use of cannabis and other cannabis-based products (CBP) with the misuse of tranquilizers, sedatives, and sleeping pills (TSSp) between 2009 and 2015; and (b) to identify the factors associated with the probability of the co-use of CBP with TSSp misuse during this period among Spanish younger adults (15–34 years old). We analyzed data collected from the Spanish National Surveys on Alcohol and Other Drugs (EDADES) in 2009, 2011, 2013, and 2015. CBP co-use with TSSp misuse were the dependent variab...

Abstract BACKGROUND: In the past years numerous studies have investigated the efficacy of baclofen for alcohol dependence. After publication of several reviews a number of new randomized controlled trials have been published. Two recent meta-analyses, based on largely the same studies, reported contrary results. One meta-analysis showed a positive effect on time to relapse and abstinence at endpoint. The other meta-analysis did not show an effect on the primary outcome measures. AIM: To clarify the clinical relevance of the effect of baclofen on alcohol use in patients with a disorder in the use of alcohol, in the...

CONCLUSION: There are four distinct youth alcohol-use patterns. The high probability of transitioning to drinking during the secondary school years suggests the need for preventive interventions in earlier stages of use, before drinking becomes habitual. PMID: 31517467 [PubMed - in process]
