Authors: Af Björkesten CG, Jussila A, Kemppainen H, Hallinen T, Soini E, Mankinen P, Valgarðsson S, Veckman V, Nissinen R, Naessens D, Molander P Abstract Background and Aims: A retrospective non-interventional, multi-centre patient chart review study was conducted to investigate the association of faecal calprotectin (FC) 1 year (±2 months) after biological therapy initiation with composite event-free survival (CEFS) consisting of surgical procedures, corticosteroid initiation, treatment failure or dose increase in patients with Crohn's disease (CD). In addition, the correlations of F...

In this study, we aim to assess plasma and serum calprotectin measurements as biomarkers of disease activity in paediatric and adult ulcerative colitis. Methods: Paediatric (5-18 years) and adult (>18 years) patients scheduled for colonoscopy due to suspected or confirmed ulcerative colitis were included prospectively. Stool and blood samples were collected at time of colonoscopy and patient symptom scores were recorded. At colonoscopy the Ulcerative Colitis Endoscopic Index of Severity was recorded. Histology was graded according to the Geboes score. Results: 84 patients where included; 30 paediatric and ...

Conclusions: This study identified a number of key genes and pathways involved in CD and potential drugs to combat it, which might offer insights into CD pathogenesis and provide a clue to potential treatments. PMID: 31526198 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Conclusion: Several health maintenance aspects are inadequately addressed by GIs and PCPs, in part because of conflicting perceptions of responsibility. Clear guidelines and better GI/PCP communication are required to ensure effective health maintenance for patients with IBD. PMID: 31528131 [PubMed]

In this study, trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis rats were treated with G. acuta extract (GAE) or DMB for 10 days. Body weight, food and water intake, rectal bleeding score, diarrhea score, and histopathological parameters were measured. Rat colon were collected to determine myeloperoxidase, nitric oxide levels, and inflammatory cytokines expression. In addition, the role of DMB on lipopolysaccharide stimulated RAW264.7 cell inflammatory response and intestine smooth muscle contraction was determined. The results showed that GAE and DMB treatment could significantly alleviate TNBS-induced UC. Colon morpho...

Chronic psychological stress is associated with an increased risk for relapse of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and impedes the treatment of this condition. However, the impact of stress on the risk of IBD onset remains unclear. The goal of the present study was to examine whether chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) could initiate or aggravate the onset of colon inflammation in rats which, in turn, would be capable of triggering bowel disease. We found that CUMS exposure increased infiltration of CD-45 positive cells and MPO activity, as well as augmented the expression of the inflammatory cytokines, IFN-γ an...

Conclusions: Long-term outcomes of adalimumab therapy in Korean UC patients appear to be comparable to those in previously published Western studies. Furthermore, previous exposure to multiple biologic before adalimumab therapy and disease activity after 8 weeks of adalimumab therapy were predictors of adalimumab discontinuation. Authors: Cai J, Chen H, Weng M, Jiang S, Gao J Abstract Background: Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic intestinal inflammatory disease. An ideal laboratory marker that can predict the prognosis in terms of relapse of the disease is clinically desirable. Methods: A total of 59 CD patients were enrolled in this study. Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) was used to quantitatively detect the content of D-lactate (D-LA) and the diamine oxidase (DAO) levels in sera obtained from patients and 28 healthy controls. The correlation between these two biomarkers and disease activity scores was assessed. In addition, ...

Authors: Marinelli C, Savarino E, Inferrera M, Lorenzon G, Rigo A, Ghisa M, Facchin S, D'Incà R, Zingone F Abstract Background/Aim: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic disorder affecting patients' quality of life and increasing their disability. The aim of our study was to evaluate clinical and pharmacological factors associated with impaired quality of life and disability in a large cohort of IBD patients during IBD treatment. Methods: We consecutively and prospectively recruited all IBD patients referred to the IBD Unit of the "Azienda Ospedaliera" of Padua. Demographics and clinica...
