Severe corneal melting following cataract surgery in patients prescribed topical post-operative NSAIDs and a dexamethasone/neomycin combination therapy

Three patients using a post-operative combination of topical Acular ® (ketorolac) and Maxitrol® (dexamethasone and neomycin) were diagnosed with atypical keratopathy soon after routine cataract surgery. An immediate retrospective analysis of patients, who had used this topical drug combination within the hospital in the previous year, identified 10 further patient s who also had significant corneal pathology following uncomplicated cataract surgery. Five of the 13 affected patients had corneal melting and one of these patients suffered corneal perforation and endophthalmitis.
