Conclusions The addition of MNBs to culture medium offers an innovative approach for the oxygenation of transplantable tissue, such as islet cells. This study demonstrated that MNBs filled with air provided the most optimal addition to the islet cell culture medium for improving islet cell survival amongst the treatment groups we tested. Given these findings, we hypothesize that MNBs may also improve the oxygenation and survival of a variety of other tissues, including fat grafts from lipoaspirate, chronic wounds, and solid organs.

Ketosis-prone type 2 diabetes (“Flatbush diabetes”) carries features of both classical type 1 and type 2 diabetes and is highly prevalent in African populations. The disease, which is highly ketosis-prone, but neither chronically insulinopenic nor autoimmune, is discussed regarding pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment from a patient case perspective.

CONCLUSION: GLP-1 RA therapy represents an important add-on therapy option for achieving decreased insulin doses, weight loss, and modest improvements in HbA1c levels without significantly increasing hypoglycemia risk in patients with T1DM. Patients who have detectable C-peptide and/or are overweight or cannot achieve glycemic goals without hypoglycemia have been found to benefit the most from GLP-1 RA therapy.
