J Neurol Surg B DOI: 10.1055/s-0039-1696706 Objectives The main purpose of this article is to examine a single-center cohort of patients with nasopharyngeal adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) for pathologic features, skull base invasion, overall survival, and disease-free survival, with a focus on response to proton beam radiation therapy. Design, Setting, and Participants Single-center institutional cancer registry was used to retrospectively identify and analyze outcomes for 12 patients treated for ACC of the nasopharynx from 2000 to 2016. Main Outcomes and Measures Primary outcomes included 5-year ov...

Authors: Zhang X, Ye Y, Fu M, Zheng B, Qiu Q, Huang Z Abstract The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is tightly associated with a variety of human tumors, including Burkitt lymphoma and acquired immune deficiency syndrome-related lymphoma of B-cell origin, as well as nasopharyngeal carcinoma and gastric cancer of epithelial origin. The virus latently infects the host cells and expresses proteins and non-coding RNAs to achieve malignancy. MicroRNAs (miRNAs or miRs) are small RNAs consisting of 19-25 nucleotides, which directly bind to the 3'-untranslated region of mRNAs to promote degradation and inhibit translation of mRNAs...

Publication date: Available online 12 September 2019Source: Seminars in Cancer BiologyAuthor(s): Chi Man Tsang, Vivian Wai Yan Lui, Jeffrey P. Bruce, Trevor J. Pugh, Kwok Wai LoAbstractNasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), also named the Cantonese cancer, is a unique cancer with strong etiological association with infection of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). With particularly high prevalence in Southeast Asia, the involvement of EBV and genetic aberrations contributive to NPC tumorigenesis have remained unclear for decades. Recently, genomic analysis of NPC has defined it as a genetically homogeneous cancer, driven largely by NF-&...

In this study, we overexpressed LMP1 in two NPC cell lines and found elevated level of cytokeratin 19 (CK19) expression. CK19 is an undifferentiated keratin and a stem cell marker. We also have found an increased number of ALDH positive cells along with LMP1 overexpression in both cell lines. Our data demonstrate that LMP1 regulates the maintenance of ALDH-1 positive NPC cancer stem cells, thus shedding light on target therapy of NPC in clinical application. Keywords: nasopharyngeal carcinoma; latent membrane protein 1; aldehyde dehydrogenase; cancer stem cells. PMID: 31507199 [PubMed - in process]

This study explored to investigate whether skeletal muscle loss after chemoradiotherapy (CRT) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients can predict survival.MethodsA total of 394 non ‐metastatic NPC patients were enrolled. The cross‐sectional area of the third lumbar skeletal muscle based on computed tomography (CT) scan was measured and the skeletal muscle index (SMI) was calculated. A cut‐off value suitable for the Chinese population was used to define sarcopenia, and re lative changes in skeletal muscle after treatment were analyzed for the confirmation of skeletal muscle tissue loss during treatment and its impa...

Conclusions: Higher serum cotinine level is associated with higher seropositivity for EBV serological markers in healthy men in southern China. Such positive association was also observed in women but became non-significant. If confirmed to be causal, this finding has important implications for tobacco control and prevention of EBV-related disease, particularly for NPC.

CONCLUSION: There is no evidence of benefit from the addition of cetuximab to standard management protocols, and there is some evidence of increased toxicity. There is more promise for its use in metastatic or locally recurrent settings. This review draws together the existing evidence and could provide a focus for future studies.
