Mupirocin Resistance in Staphylococcus aureus: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

ConclusionOverall our results show a global increase in the prevalence of HLMuRSA and HLMuRMRSA among clinical S. aureus isolates over time. However, there was only a significant increase in the prevalence of MuRMRSA compared to the other categories of strains especially MuRSA. Since for decolonization of MSSA and MRSA in both patients and healthcare personnel, mupirocin is currently still the most effective antibiotic, a reduction of its effectiveness can provide a risk for invasive infection. Monitoring of mupirocin resistance development remains critical.

ConclusionThis study describes the main features of the draft genome of S. agnetis 3682, a strain producing the first bacteriocin (agneticin 3682) reported in this species. A second gene cluster encoding a sactipeptide was also found in the bacterial chromosome. Agneticin 3682 shows a new potential application against clinical MRSA isolates.

Healthcare associated infection (HCAI) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. In recent years, there have been high profile successes in infection prevention control (IPC), such as the dramatic reductions in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bloodstream infections (which is viewed as one proxy indicator of overall harm) and Clostridium difficile in the UK. Nevertheless, HCAI remains a costly burden to health services, a source of concern to patients and the public and at present, is receiving priority from policy makers as it contributes to the global threat of antimicrobial resistance.
