A case of furuncular myiasis analyzed with enhanced light microscopy techniques

We present a case of furuncular myiasis in a 6-year-old girl returning from visiting relatives in Ethiopia. She presented with a 10-day history of an enlarging, tender, red nodule on her left anterolateral thigh that appeared during her trip abroad. The lesion was initially diagnosed as a bacterial abscess but failed to improve with oral cephalexin and topical mupirocin. On our examination, we noted a solitary, firm, dark reddish-brown nodule, 3cm in diameter, with an 8mm diameter hemorrhagic central crust.
