Gender balance in clinical research: Why it matters, an introduction

Introduction: Gender balance has finally become an important goal in our society as we attempt to achieve it both in our professional and personal lives. Interestingly, this has not been the case in medical research; gender balance is rarely mentioned in the literature in both animal studies and human trials. In dermatology research we have seen an interesting correlation between the efficacy of biologics and sex. For example adalimumab shows 70-80% efficacy in psoriasis where 70-80% of patients enrolled in the trials were male.
