Hidradenitis suppurativa: The evolution of disease terminology with histopathologic discoveries

Introduction: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is an inflammatory condition characterized by recurrent abscesses, primarily in skin folds. The disease has been referred to by a multitude of terms, reflecting histopathologic discoveries. We review historical developments in the terminology and pathogenesis of HS, highlighting how many terms may be a misnomer.
