Transcriptomics analysis of basal cell carcinomas reveals a role in carcinogenesis for ectopically-expressed genes and novel signaling pathways

Background: Outside the well-established role of the Sonic hedgehog (Shh) pathway in basal cell carcinoma(BCC) carcinogenesis, the transcriptional landscape of BCC remains incompletely understood. In particular, the contribution of ectopically expressed genes such as cancer testis(CT), embryonic stem cell(ESC) and meiomitosis genes is unknown. Using bioinformatics analyses on previously published BCC RNA-Sequencing(RNA-Seq) data, and experimental validation on our BCC samples, we searched for novel differentially expressed genes and pathways in BCC according to clinically relevant features.
