CONCLUSION: DAS28 score and disease activity are strong indicators of TMJ affection in RA patients when compared to RF and ACCP. ACCP is a better indicator of changes in condylar measurements than TMJ osteoarthritic changes. While RF is the least efficient indicator of TMJ involvement in RA patients. Authors: Ciccacci C, Latini A, Perricone C, Conigliaro P, Colafrancesco S, Ceccarelli F, Priori R, Conti F, Perricone R, Novelli G, Borgiani P Abstract Autoimmune diseases (AIDs) are complex diseases characterized by persistent or recurrent inflammation, alteration of immune response, and production of specific autoantibodies. It is known that different AIDs share several susceptibility genetic loci. Tumor necrosis factor alpha inducible protein 3 (TNFAIP3) encodes the ubiquitin-modifying enzyme A20, which downregulates inflammation by restricting NF-κB, a transcription factor that regulates expression of var...

Publication date: Available online 19 September 2019Source: Chemico-Biological InteractionsAuthor(s): Prachurjya Dutta, Ravi Kumar Sahu, Tapan Dey, Manisha Datta Lahkar, Prasenjit Manna, Jatin KalitaAbstractInsect-based bioactive components are emerging as novel sources of drugs, effective against various diseases. Inflammation is considered to be an innate immune response developed by different organisms against foreign pathogens and cellular stress. However, repetitive elevated inflammation is considered to be responsible for development of many other diseases including colitis and arthritis. Due to the limited activitie...

If you’re like most people, you’ve seen a ton of direct-to-consumer (DTC) drug ads in recent years. They’re all over television, in magazines, online, on billboards, and slapped on the sides of buses, promoting treatments for arthritis, cancer, heartburn, psoriasis, flagging memory — and more. The deluge of drug ads can be overwhelming. Worse, the information is often incomplete, biased, or confusing. That’s why we’re launching the Harvard Health Ad Watch series to highlight some benefits and problems with health product advertisements. We’ll focus on the evidence behind the ads an...

Objective The aim of the study was to assess the time effect of intra-articular injection with triamcinolone hexacetonide in rheumatic patients. Design A prospective case-control study with patients submitted to one intra-articular injection with triamcinolone hexacetonide. Patients were followed monthly (12 mos) for pain and swelling. Results Two hundred sixty-two joints were assessed in 158 patients with mean ± SD age of 60 ± 13.7 yrs. Remission was observed at 3, 6, and 12 mos in 142 (54.19%), 111 (42.36%), and 105 (40.07%) joints, respectively. The mean ± SD time effect were 8 ± 4.0 ...

Neutrophils are the most abundant, short lived, and terminally differentiated leukocytes with distinct tiers of arsenals to counter pathogens. Neutrophils were traditionally considered transcriptionally inactive cells, but recent researches in the field led to a paradigm shift in neutrophil biology and revealed subpopulation heterogeneity, and functions pivotal to immunity and inflammation. Furthermore, recent unfolding of metabolic plasticity in neutrophils has challenged the long-standing concept of their sole dependence on glycolytic pathway. Metabolic adaptations and distinct regulations have been identified which are ...
