We refer transmission of infections in India which have implications for Pakistan [1]. As compared to Pakistan, the range and burden of infectious diseases are enormous in India including Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) contagion in 2002 –2003, Influenza A virus epidemic of 2006 (avian influenza), 2007 Equine influenza, Swine flu pandemic outbreaks in 2009 and 2014 [2]. Moreover, episodes of infectious diseases continue to rise in India, with a recent surge of chikungunya and dengue cases in 2016 [1].

The relentless increase of public health crises caused by emergent, often life-threatening infectious diseases —eg, Nipah virus infection, severe acute respiratory syndrome, avian influenza, Middle East respiratory syndrome, Ebola virus disease, chikungunya, Zika virus infection, and now yellow fever—needs no introduction. In an increasingly globalised world, a coherent global response is needed, not onl y in the immediate care of patients and countermeasures to transmission but also in the prompt initiation of research efforts.

Abstract: We live in a world with the constant threat of emerging viral infections. In the last two decades, we have seen the highly publicised emergence of the Nipah Virus, SARS, MERS, the re-emergence of Ebola and the H1N1 2009 pandemic influenza together with a host of other emerging and re-emerging viruses including Zika, Chikungunya, Dengue. As clinicians, we are the front line of response to these threats and the key to the response has to be good surveillance and clinical management. High quality clinical microbiology support is critical as is both “shoe-leather” and molecular epidemiology.
