Long non-coding RNA H19 knockdown inhibits the cell viability and promotes apoptosis of thyroid cancer cells through regulating the PI3K/AKT pathway.

Long non-coding RNA H19 knockdown inhibits the cell viability and promotes apoptosis of thyroid cancer cells through regulating the PI3K/AKT pathway. Exp Ther Med. 2019 Sep;18(3):1863-1869 Authors: Li X, Li Q, Jin X, Guo H, Li Y Abstract Certain long non-coding (lnc)RNAs have been reported to serve important roles in the genesis and progression of thyroid cancer (TC). Recent studies have demonstrated that the expression of lncRNA H19 is upregulated in TC tissues; however, knowledge of the associated molecular mechanisms is limited. Therefore, the present study aimed to clarify the roles of H19 in TC. The mRNA expression of lncRNA H19 in TC tissues was determined using reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis, and the effects of H19 knockdown on cell viability and apoptosis in vitro were assessed using MTT and flow cytometric assays, respectively. Finally, the signaling pathways involved in the effects of H19 were examined. The results indicated that H19 was upregulated in TC tissues. Silencing of H19 inhibited the cell viability and promoted apoptosis of FTC-133 and TPC-1 TC cells, accompanied by an increased expression of B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2)-associated X protein and caspase 3, and repressed expression of Bcl-2. The results of western blot analysis suggested that the levels of phosphorylated phosphoinositide-3 kinase (PI3K) and phosphorylated AKT were attenuated by H19 silencing. These results suggest that lncRNA H19 exe...

Elena Bakhanova An overview and new data are presented from cancer studies of the most exposed groups of the population after the Chornobyl accident, performed at the National Research Center for Radiation Medicine (NRCRM). Incidence rates of solid cancers were analyzed for the 1990–2016 period in cleanup workers, evacuees, and the general population from the contaminated areas. In male cleanup workers, the significant increase in rates was demonstrated for cancers in total, leukemia, lymphoma, and thyroid cancer, as well as breast cancer rates were increased in females. Significantly elevated thyroid cancer ...

The objective is, therefore, to examine the relation between co-morbid CVD at cancer diagnosis and HRQoL among cancer survivors diagnosed with colorectal, thyroid, prostate, endometrium, ovarian cancer, melanoma, (non-)Hodgkin lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), or multiple myeloma (MM) in an exploratory population-based cross-sectional study. Material and methods: Analyses were performed on combined data sets from the PROFILES and Netherlands Cancer Registry (NCR). Data on co-morbid CVD at cancer diagnosis was extracted from the NCR. HRQoL was measured via PROFILES at a median of 4.6 years after cancer di...

President Donald Trump on Monday signed legislation that will extend the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund until 2092. During the signing ceremony at the White House, Trump was surrounding by first responders, survivors and family members of several who died in the 2001 terrorist attack on the United States. The U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S Senate voted overwhelmingly last week to approve the legislation that will provide a lifetime of assistance for victims and their families. The extension will allow the fund, first established in 2001, to pay for past and future medical claims of those effected by the...

The U.S. Senate followed the House of Representatives on Tuesday and passed legislation that will extend the September 11 Victim Compensation Fund until 2092. The legislation will fund all current and future medical claims of those effected by the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, and United Flight 93, which crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The extension of funding will benefit victims who may develop mesothelioma linked to the more than 400 tons of asbestos that covered the 16-acre disaster zone after the twin towers fell. According to World Trade Center R...

The Senate gallery erupted in applause from politicians and first responders on Tuesday after a 97-2 vote to extend the September 11 Victim Compensation Fund until 2092. The reauthorization will fund all current and future medical claims of those effected by the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, and United Flight 93, which crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The extension will allow victims and their families to file claims through 2090, but they will be paid out through 2092. The extension of funding will benefit victims who may develop mesothelioma linked to ...

AbstractAimsOur aim was to investigate the glucose uptake in cancer patients suffering from different entities, using18F ‐FDG positron emission tomography–computed tomography scans. We further aimed at identifying potential variables altering cardiac and skeletal muscle glucose metabolism. Methods and resultsIn a retrospective cohort study, we analysed cardiac and skeletal muscle18F ‐FDG uptake in onco‐positron emission tomography–computed tomography scans in adult patients suffering from Hodgkin's lymphoma, non‐Hodgkin's lymphoma, and non‐lymphatic cancer including patients suffering from thyroid canc...

Thyroid cancer remains a significant health problem worldwide. Traditional chemotherapy does generate long-term benefit but are usually accompanied by severe side effects. Immunotherapy by adoptive infusion of T cells is now an attractive alternative to chemotherapy. Chimeric antigen receptor engineered lymphocytes have produced tremendous clinical outcomes in treating leukemia or lymphoma, but not in solid tumors, which is in part due to the low affinity of single chain Fv fragment or the rapid loss of transfused T cells. In present research, we designed a novel Fab based chimeric antigen receptor, which inherits the adva...

Conclusion: Histopathological evaluation supplemented by IHC is the gold standard for the diagnosis of PTL. Combined chemoradiotherapy appears to be the best treatment modality, irrespective of histological type. MIB-1 and MUM1 IHC may have a role in identifying DLBCL, particularly in small biopsies. Role of p53 and BCL2 needs further evaluation.
