Patient-reported involvement of the eighth cranial nerve in giant cell arteritis

ConclusionSymptoms of eighth nerve dysfunction are present in over half of patients with GCA. Recovery with steroids was predicted by concurrence with headache in terms of both timing and location. It appears that eighth nerve involvement, especially acute hearing loss, is a not infrequent feature of GCA and often responds well to steroid therapy. Clinicians should enquire about these symptoms when evaluating a patient for possible GCA.Key Points• Deafness is a frequent presenting feature of giant cell arteritis.• Vertigo, tinnitus and loss of balance are also often reported by GCA sufferers.• Steroid therapy is more likely to relieve these symptoms if they are ipsilateral and concurrent with headache.

Abstract The prior medical literature offers little guidance as to how pain relief and side effect manifestation may vary across commonly used and commercially available cannabis product types. We used the largest dataset in the United States of real-time responses to and side effect reporting from patient-directed cannabis consumption sessions for the treatment of pain under naturalistic conditions in order to identify how cannabis affects momentary pain intensity levels and which product characteristics are the best predictors of therapeutic pain relief. Between 06/06/2016 and 10/24/2018, 2987 people used the Re...

Abstract OBJECTIVE: Migraine headaches affect about approximately 15% of the population and some notable efforts have been made to develop meditation interventions to address pain and mood among this population. However, key active ingredients and the necessary duration of meditation interventions to produce an effect are still unknown. The purpose of this study is to assess key meditation ingredients that positively impact mood and headache factors across different meditation techniques and to establish an initial time or" dose" needed to reach proactive treatment efficacy. METHOD: In this longitud...

CONCLUSIONS: While both sound types had a positive impact on many dimensions of tinnitus, only the broadband noise was associated with a reduction in blood pressure. These results are consistent with a complex interaction between sound and tinnitus and suggest a multifactorial basis to sound therapy that includes a reduction in arousal.
