Vaping mayhem in US: The many health and legal battles over over e-cigs, explained
In recent weeks, the scandals surrounding e-cigarettes - from counterfeits, to regulation tug-of-war, to seizures and lung damage - have reached a feverpitch. We break them down.
We report a case of a 46-year-old Chinese male who presented with six months history of abdominal pain, weight loss and rectal bleeding. Diagnostic colonoscopy revealed multiple aphthous ulcers within the ileo-caecal region and distal transverse colon, separated by normal mucosa, mimicking skip lesions of Crohn's colitis. Computer topography (CT) scan of the abdomen showed multiple circumferential thickenings involving predominantly the right colon. A clinical diagnosis of colonic Crohn's disease with possible perforation was made. An extended right hemicolectomy was performed due to uncontrolled rectal bleeding. Histopath...
ConclusionsAdjuvant docetaxel without prednisone did not improve BDFS after radical RT with ADT for intermediate- or high-risk PCa.Patient summaryWe compared six cycles of adjuvant docetaxel given after radical external radiotherapy plus androgen deprivation therapy to surveillance in intermediate- and high-risk localised prostate cancer. We found no overall benefit in this setting.
DiscussionMalignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST) are uncommon sarcomatous tumors that are believed to be derived from Schwann cell or neighboring cells with perineurial differentiation. MTT is rarely reported in mediastinum, lung and heart (
ConclusionRetrosternal goiter causes airway compromise in most patients. Surgery for such cases is a challenging procedure with higher rate of complications, CT-scan is the most single valuable tool in selecting patients for sternotomy before surgery but the final decision for sternotomy is best done during surgery. A team work between a thyroid surgeon and a thoracic surgeon will have better results.
ConclusionWe report a rare case of patient with synchronous liver metastases from gastric cancer who experienced stable disease for 7 years and 3 months following multidisciplinary modalities. Future trials are required to prospectively investigate the established regimen of multidisciplinary treatment.
It is a common practice to require the patient to fast before duplex ultrasound examination of the abdominal aorta. However, there is no high-level evidence that such practice results in better accuracy or enhances image quality. The fasting requirement may lead to delay of the testing, decreases vascular laboratory efficiency, and negatively affects patient satisfaction. The aim of this study was to assess necessity and feasibility of a randomized controlled study of the effect of fasting on the quality of duplex ultrasound of abdominal aorta.
Publication date: Available online 20 August 2019Source: Journal of Forensic Radiology and ImagingAuthor(s): Angi M. Christensen, Gary M. HatchAbstractFractography is the study of fracture surface morphology and its relationship to crack propagation. Recent work has demonstrated the utility of fractography for interpreting crack propagation and impact direction in fractured bones as part of forensic anthropological trauma analyses on skeletonized remains. In this proof-of-concept work, we assess whether the science of fractography can be applied using CT scans of bone fractures. For CT scans to have practical potential for...
ConclusionCardiac high-pitch CTA of neonates with CHD can be performed safely and dose-reducing without additional test bolus or bolus tracking scan. With very good image quality, it provides a detailed insight into the cardiac anatomy and thus enables a differentiated, noninvasive therapy planning.
We present a case of a 60-year-old male patient presented with bilateral inguinal swelling associated with urinary hesitancy and intermittency. He had undergone transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) repair for a left inguinal hernia 8 years ago. CT scan confirmed the presence of a bilateral hernia with the bladder herniating bilaterally. He underwent an elective bilateral open Lichtenstein tension-free mesh repair.
ConclusionsComputer-aided planning and the use of surgical guides in accordance with CBCT images may help inexperienced clinicians to place implants with high accuracy.
