CONCLUSIONS: Most of the patients in this series of FFA were postmenopausal women. The prevalence of oral and genital lichen planus was higher than that observed in the general population. Patients with a linear pattern had less severe disease. Facial papules were more common in younger patients and both facial papules and rosacea were associated with a greater need for oral treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor (TSHR) in healthy oral mucosa and in OLP lesions of individuals with and without HT.
ConclusionsA significant number of patients with OLP who are not previously diagnosed with thyroid disease have thyroid parameters that are compatible with hypothyroidism. The expression of thyroid‐stimulating hormone receptor in OLP lesions suggests that mechanisms related to autoimmune thyroid disease are involved in the aetiology of OLP.This article is protected by copyright. Koilonychia is a common concave nail dystrophy in which the nail plate is depressed centrally and elevated laterally.1 The term has Greek origins, with koilos meaning spoon. The pathophysiology of koilonychia, or spoon nails, is poorly understood. It has been associated with dermatologic disorders such as alopecia areata, psoriasis, and lichen planus; endocrinopathies such as hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and diabetes mellitus; nutritional deficiencies, notably iron deficiency anemia; genodermatoses; and traumatic and occupational exposures.

Conclusion: The general dental provider should be familiar with mucous membrane pemphigoid and the potential association with hypothyroidism. Early diagnosis of hypothyroidism is significant because replacement may prevent a significant morbidity associated with this condition. Therefore, the general dental provider should be aware of oral conditions presented as desquamative gingivitis and their potential association with hypothyroidism.
