Atrial fibrillation after lung surgery: incidence, underlying factors, and predictors.

Conclusions: Pulmonary malignant pathologies are more likely to develop POAF due to the need for lung resection and possibly mediastinal lymphadenectomy that stimulates the heart and pericardium and the vagus nerve. PMID: 31410090 [PubMed]

However, the clinical use of zinc(II) complexes is hampered by hydrolytic insolubility and poor bioavailability and their anticancer mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we investigated the efficacy and mechanism of action of a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP-k30)-based solid dispersion of Zn(II)-curc...

Conclusions: The incidence of omental metastasis is not low in patients with USC. Visual assessment and omental biopsy may be insufficient for recognizing occult metastases. Omentectomy should be part of the staging surgery in USC patients because it provides additional information about survival. Prospective studies are needed to confirm these results. Abstract CA125/MUC16 is an ovarian tumor cell marker widely used as a biomarker in epithelial ovarian carcinoma. CA125/MUC16 is also used for evaluation of the ROMA (Risk of Ovarian Malignancy Algorithm) value. In this work, a Surface Plasmon Resonance Imaging (SPRI) biosensor for circulating CA125/MUC16 has been developed. The anti-MUC16 antibody was attached to a gold chip via a cysteamine linker. The EDS/NHS protocol was used for the covalent attachment of the antibody. The developed biosensor is specific for CA125/MUC16, and exhibits good recovery and acceptable precision. Its linear response range (2.2-150 U/...

Abstract Cancer is one of the most widespread challenges and important diseases, which has the highest mortality rate. Lung cancer is the most common type of cancer, so that about 25% of all cancer deaths are related to the lung cancer. The lung cancer is classified as two different types with different treatment methodology: the small cell lung carcinoma and nonsmall cell lung carcinoma are two categories of the lung cancer. Since the lung cancer is often in the latent period in its early stages, therefore, early diagnosis of lung cancer has many challenges. Hence, there is a need for sensitive and reliable tools...

pelo-Martínez JL Abstract A novel analytical approach is proposed to discriminate between solid biopsies of chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (chRCC) and renal oncocytoma (RO). The method comprises the following steps: (i) ultrasonic extraction of proteins from solid biopsies, (ii) protein depletion with acetonitrile, (iii) ultrasonic assisted in-solution digestion using magnetic nanoparticle with immobilized trypsin, (iv) C18 tip-based preconcentration of peptides, (v) sequential extraction of the peptides with ACN, (vi) MALDI-snapshot of the extracts and (vii) investigation of the extract containing the mo...

EVOLUTION OF TARGETED THERAPIES FOR THYROID CARCINOMA. Trans Am Clin Climatol Assoc. 2019;130:255-265 Authors: Sherman SI Abstract Although treatment options for patients with advanced and metastatic thyroid carcinoma were historically limited, developments in the past 15 years in understanding the pathogenesis of these malignancies have permitted identification of novel targeted therapies to improve outcomes. Five individual drugs and one combination therapy have achieved regulatory approval since 2011, all showing improvements in progression-free survival or high response rates. More selective target...

THE GORDON WILSON LECTURE: THE HEPATITIS C VIRUS: FROM HIPPOCRATES TO CURE. Trans Am Clin Climatol Assoc. 2019;130:104-118 Authors: Alter HJ Abstract The modern age of viral hepatitis began in the early 1960s with the serendipitous discovery of the Australia antigen, a protein that was later shown to represent the envelope of the hepatitis B virus leading to its designation as the hepatitis B surface antigen. This was the first marker for any hepatitis virus and became not only a diagnostic assay, but also a mandatory blood donor screening test and the basis for the first generation hepatitis B vaccine...

Authors: Farrugia FA, Charalampopoulos A Abstract Pheochromocytomas are rare tumors originating in the adrenal medulla. They may be sporadic or in the context of a hereditary syndrome. A considerable number of pheochromocytomas carry germline or somatic gene mutations, which are inherited in the autosomal dominant way. All patients should undergo genetic testing. Symptoms are due to catecholamines over production or to a mass effect. Diagnosis is confirmed by raised plasma or urine metanephrines or normetanephrines. Radiology assists in the tumor location and any local invasion or metastasis. All the patients shoul...

The objective of the present study was to investigate the mRNA levels of important miRNA machinery components, DICER1, DROSHA, DiGeroge syndrome critical region gene 8 (DGCR8), and Argonaute 2 (AGO2), and their correlations with clinicopathological characteristics of ccRCC using mRNA expression data from The Cancer Genome Atlas kidney clear cell carcinoma (TCGA KIRC) cohort and a Korean ccRCC cohort. mRNA levels of DICER1, DROSHA, and DGCR8 were significantly decreased in both cohorts. However, AGO2 was significantly downregulated only in the Korean ccRCC cohort. Additionally, positive correlations were observed between th...
