Reconstruction of traumatic tubular bone defects using vascularized fibular graft

Reconstruction of segmental bony defects of the appendicular skeleton has always been a challenge for orthopedic surgeons. These defects may occur primarily due to high energy trauma, or may result secondarily due to excision of pathological bone (ie: infected nonunions, chronic osteomyelitis, or resection of bone tumors). Additional soft tissue defects of the injury site and failed previous surgical attempts for bony reconstruction further complicate the ongoing trouble, leading to atrophic bone ends, scarred soft tissues with poor vascularity and possibly infection at the injury zone; ending up with loss of function, limb length discrepancies, deformity, joint instability, and pain [1].
