This study will evaluate the health care costs and utilization of individuals during their first year of enrollment in HOME and identify factors associated with higher cost and utilization. Secondary analysis of claims data were used to identify cost and utilization. Generalized linear regression and negative binomial regression were used to calculate utilization and cost. The mean total cost of care during the initial year of enrollment (n=239) per individual was $11,095.87, with $4,640.83 attributed to inpatient care. Those with diabetes (p=0.01), epilepsy (p=0.02), or mood disorders (p=0.03) were more likely to be admit...

(CNN) — Water fluoridation has been hailed by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as one of the top great public health achievements of the 20th century, but a new study raises questions about its role as a potential neurotoxin in utero. The study, published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics on Monday, found that increased levels of fluoride exposure during pregnancy were associated with declines in IQ in children. Previous research has made similar findings, but this is the first such study to evaluate the effect of fluoride on populations receiving what the US Public Health Service considers optimal leve...

ConclusionOur study supports the notion that NDDs may exist along a complex phenotypic/biological continuum. All NDD groups showed a sustained parietal activity profile suggesting that they share a strong reliance on the posterior parietal cortices to complete the mental flexibility task; future studies could elucidate whether this is due to delayed brain development or compensatory functioning. The differences in frontal activity may play a role in differentiating the NDDs. The OCD group showed sustained prefrontal activity that may be reflective of hyperfrontality. The ASD group showed reduced frontal activation suggesti...

AbstractAutism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder and systemic disease with multiple comorbidities and largely fragmented clinical care. In this article, we discuss three important components frequently missing from the current ASD standard care routine: oral health, nutrition, and house-call programs. Both ASD centers associated with tertiary-care hospitals and community ASD providers do not regularly offer these services. In this review, we address the benefits of and rationale behind incorporating dental care, nutrition, and house-call programs into ASD management. We also explain why these...

The purpose of this study was to investigate the network structure between SP traits and other subclinical features (symptoms or traits) and test the replicability of these relationships. A total of 2204 college students completed measurements for SP traits, autistic traits, obsessi...

This study used a multiple baseline, single-subject research design to investigate the efficacy of an iPad®-based speech-generating device (SGD). The iPad was equipped with the SPEAKall!® application to function as a SGD. SGDs are a form of aided augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) allowing a user to communicate using digitized and/or synthesized speech. Instruction followed a modified version of the intervention phases from the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). This modified PECS protocol was implemented with two adolescents and one young adult between the ages of 14 and 23. All three part...
