Absolute or relative stability in plate fixation for simple humeral shaft fractures.

Humeral shaft fractures represent 1% –3% of all fractures [1]. Classically these fractures have been treated conservatively. Due to a more demanding society, surgical fixation is becoming more popular in high income countries [2]. Both nail and plate fixation may be used. However, plate fixation is becoming the preferred method since the last decades [2]. This is likely caused by emerging evidence demonstrating shoulder pain, rotator cuff damage and periprosthetic fractures secondary to nailing [3].
