Authors: Sghaier I, Zidi S, Mouelhi L, Ghazoueni E, Brochot E, Almawi WY, Loueslati BY Abstract BACKGROUND: Chronic infection with hepatitis B (HBV) and C virus (HCV) is linked with a pro-inflammatory state, predisposing to cirrhosis and liver cancer, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). A role for toll-like receptor (TLR) signalling in hepatocarcinogenesis was recently documented. We hypothesised a link TLR3 and TLR4 polymorphisms and HCC, as surrogates for the significance of TLR signalling in the promotion and initiation of HCC. MATERIALS &METHODS: We recruited 174 HCV-infected patients, 100 HBV-...

Authors: Korhan P, Yılmaz Y, Bağırsakçı E, Güneş A, Topel H, Carr BI, Atabey N Abstract Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major health problem worldwide and most cases are incurable because of late presentation. It is the most common primary neoplasm of the liver and often arises in the context of a chronic liver disease that impairs coagulation. Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) is a common complication of HCC that is associated with a poor prognosis. Heparin derivatives are widely used in the management of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Among them low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) favorably influen...

We describe a 32-year-old woman with spontaneous regression of HL and review the literature. The patient presented with cervical lymphadenopathy and was diagnosed with stage IIA classical HL. The patient refused to receive any treatment for her disease. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography carried out 2 years later showed complete regression of the lymphadenopathy, without pathological uptake of fluorodeoxyglucose. At the last follow-up, 3.5 years after the initial presentation, the patient is with no evidence of disease. During workup for the HL, concomitant papillary thyroid carcinoma was diagnosed, for which...

ConclusionThe incidental discovery of microscopic SCC in a zone of ORN of the mandible is a rare event and has not been reported in the literature. Optimal management cannot be reliably defined due to the lack of data in the literature, but the present study supports careful histological examination of ORN specimens. Treatment must be as conservative as possible to avoid excessively invasive surgery.

Lambert-Eaton Myasthenic Syndrome (LEMS) is a very rare and unusual autoimmune disorder of Neuromuscular Junction (NMJ) that is associated with impaired neuromuscular transmission due to loss of voltage-gated calcium channel (VGCC) present on the pre-synaptic nerve terminal. Of all the different proteins like synaptotagmin that are attacked by auto-antibodies, P/Q-type of VGCC is found to be targeted in 90 % of patients. The influx of calcium through VGCC is important for exocytosis of synaptic vesicles. LEMS is a clinical “triad” of proximal muscle weakness, areflexia, and autonomic dysfunctions. Half of the L...

Conclusion 131I provided an effective therapeutic modality for well-differentiated thyroid cancer patients with distant metastasis. After a mean of follow-up 10 years, more than 60% of cases resulted in DSM when high accumulated 131I doses were administered.

CONCLUSIONS: In multivariable analyses, no variables were associated with OS and CSS. UUT-SCC is a rare tumor characterized by an aggressive clinical course. Pathological stage and platinum-based chemotherapy regimen are the most important factors related to OS and CSS. PMID: 30421591 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Although anatomically diverse, human papillomavirus (HPV)-driven cancers have a common etiology and similar mutations that overlap with but are distinct from those found in HPV-negative cancers. Building on prior studies that have characterized subsets of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and cervical squamous cell carcin...
