Emergency diagnostics demand fast, easily available, and cost-effective procedures. The higher the accuracy of radiological imaging, the better it supports the surgeon in decision-making for further treatment. Cone-beam computed tomography has been proven to be a reliable tool in diagnosing fractures of the hand and distal forearm. It can be easily installed, has a high spatial resolution, and a potentially lower radiation dose when compared with multislice computed tomography or a series of plain x-rays.

Introduction: Elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) allows for efficient reduction and stabilization of fractures of the tibial shaft in children and adolescents. However, for fractures of the distal third of the tibia, traditional ESIN could be inappropriate, thus compromising the stability and the healing of the fracture. The aim of this study was to present and to assess a new technique of modified ESIN to treat fracture of the distal third of the tibia, called divergent intramedullary nailing (DIN). Methods: We performed a retrospective monocentric study. All patients less than 16 years old, managed in our ...

Authors: Yao G, Zou Y, Wang J, Yu H, Chen T Abstract  The aim of this study is to present a fully automated registration algorithm that allows for alignment and errors analysis of the 3D surface model obtained from industrial computed tomography (CT) images with the computer-aided design (CAD) model. First, two pre-processing steps are executed by the algorithm namely, CAD model subdivision and representing models. Next, two improved registration procedures are applied including covariance descriptors-based coarse registration with a novel and automatic calibration, followed by a fine registration technique th...

While in the last years, sci-fi stories, experts and even some opinion-leader public figures frequently spelled the end of mankind through artificial intelligence, lately, it turned out just how easy it is to play tricks on smart algorithms and fool them into making errors. We looked around how researchers can hack A.I. and what that means for medicine and healthcare, mainly from a security perspective. Does A.I. have an Achilles heel? As the saying goes, a chain is as strong as its weakest link – and the ancient Greeks knew it. No matter that Achilles had extraordinary strength, courage, and loyalty, that he f...

The objective of this study was to understand whether NHF therapy would reduce the need for reintubation and improve clinical outcomes after surgery. METHOD: All consecutive postoperative patients who had same-day elective cardiothoracic surgery in a tertiary hospital were included. The 2013 data were from patients' charts who received COT, and the 2014 data were from patients' charts after the implementation of NHF therapy post extubation as a standard of care. RESULTS: A total of 400 patient charts were analyzed: 221 and 179 patients in the COT and NHF, respectively. No significant difference was seen in the freq...

A simple approach exploits quantum properties to justify the dependence on γ 4 of the total synchrotron emitted power. It also clarifies some apparent puzzles and brings to light the underlying, multiple relativistic phenomena.

Discussion Foreign bodies are common problems for young children particularly ages 2-4 years who will mouth many objects and aspirate or swallow them. Children will also place foreign objects in other body orifices such as ears or noses. It is also not uncommon that young girls will inadvertently have toilet paper caught in the vaginal area during hygiene. Many of these foreign bodies may work their way out naturally not causing any problems, or may come to attention later because of chronic problems such as a foul-smell or discharge. Older children may tell adults that they have placed a foreign body in an orifice and thu...
