We report cytomorphological features of two uncommon variants of acinic cell carcinoma. The first case was an eleven-year-old female with a nodular mass in parotid and the FNA smears demonstrated a lymphoepithelial lesion composed of epithelial tumour cells with features of acinar cells in a lymphoid background. The second case was a 62-year-old male with a large parotid mass. The FNA smears revealed presence of extracellular, acellular amyloid-like material with tumour cells arranged in follicles. DISCUSSION: Awareness of cytomorphological features of these unusual variants of acinic cell carcinoma may help to avoid d...

The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of malaria/TB coinfection among bacteriologically confirmed adult TB patients at a national TB treatment centre in Uganda. Using a cross-sectional study design we enrolled 363 bacteriologically confirmed adult TB patients, and data on demographics and medical history was collected. Blood samples were tested for malaria blood smear, rapid malaria diagnostic test (RDT), complete blood count, haematological film analysis, HIV serology, and CD4+ and CD8+ cell counts. Malaria was defined as either a positive blood smear or RDT. The study participants were mostly male (...

Generally speaking, discussing what happens in our bedrooms outside of the bedroom can be anxiety-provoking. Let’s try to make your doctor’s office an exception. Why is this important? People in the LGBTQ+ community contend not only with a full range of health needs, but also with environments that may lead to unique mental and physical health challenges. Whether or not you have come out in general, doing so with your doctor may prove critical in managing your health. Sexual experiences, with their impact on identity, varied emotional significance, and disease risk, are a keystone for helping your doctor unders...

Stephen Dumler, Sylvie Bisser ObjectiveWhere human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) patients are seen, failure to microscopically diagnose infections byTrypanosoma brucei gambiense in blood smears and/or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the critical early stages of the disease is the single most important factor in treatment failure, a result of delayed treatment onset or its absence. We hypothesized that the enhanced sensitivity of detergent-enhanced loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) will allow for point o...

In conclusion, the combined DySI and routine colposcopy strategy had a higher diagnostic sensitivity in subjects with low or high abnormalities on cytological examination, compared with either method separately. The present study suggests that the baseline colposcopy sensitivity may be enhanced with the adjunctive use of DySI, irrespective of the cytology result for referral. PMID: 31410104 [PubMed]

Ripening cultures containing fungi and bacteria are widely used in smear-ripened cheese production processes, but little is known about the biotic interactions of typical ripening microorganisms at the surface of cheese. We developed a lab-scale mini-cheese model to investigate the biotic interactions of a synthetic community that was composed of Debaryomyces hansenii, Brevibacterium aurantiacum and Hafnia alvei, three species that are commonly used for smear-ripened cheese production. Transcriptomic analyses of cheese samples produced with different combinations of these three species revealed potential mechanisms of biot...

ConclusionThe frequency of mutations in MTB in the coastal region of Andhra Pradesh, India, is similar to that in retreatment cases from most settings, with close to 80% in rpoB codon 516, 526, and 531, and over 80% in codons katG 315 and/or inhA promoter. The increase in INH monoresistance underlines the need for greater enforcement of national TB control programs.

For its first few years on the market, the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine was approved only for young girls. Over time, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has broadened its approval to include boys, as well as adults up to age 45—allowing more people to get the cancer-preventing vaccine, but also breeding confusion about who should get vaccinated and when. On Thursday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released new recommendations, based on guidance from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, that should clear up some of that confusion. The CDC reaffirmed that its prior...

CONCLUSION: Oral administration of BV offers remarkable and sustained efficacy in alleviating AR symptoms and may be considered as an alternative therapeutic strategy for patients with persistent AR. BV acts by improving the overall mucosal immunity via restoring and maintaining the normal Th1/Th2 cytokine balance as an underlying cellular/signaling mechanism.
