Authors: Ito A, Ishiguro T, Takaku Y, Kagiyama N, Kamei K, Takayanagi N Abstract A 42-year-old man with asthma presented in 2007 with chest infiltration and productive cough. Pycnoporus sanguineus and Perenniporia tephropora were repeatedly isolated from sputum and bronchial washing fluids. Because we lacked immunologic evidence, we could not diagnose him with allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis (ABPM) due to these basidiomycetous fungi. At that time, serum-specific IgE and IgG against Schizophyllum commune findings were negative. Inhaled beclomethasone/salmeterol improved his condition. Seven years later, mucous plu...

AbstractAsthma is one of the most common chronic health conditions in children, and social determinants are thought to be important risk factors. We used Georgia data from the Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance Survey (BRFSS), and data from the Georgia hospital and emergency department survey for children with a diagnosis of asthma. All data were from the years 2011 to 2016. SAS and SUDAAN were used to calculate weighted prevalence estimates and to perform univariate and multivariate analysis of the association between social determinants, demographic characteristics, other potential risk factors, and asthma-related outc...

AbstractTo study variables associated with Emergency Department (ED) utilization among pediatric patients with asthma in a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). We analyzed Electronic Health Record (EHR) data in a retrospective cohort study of patients with asthma between ages 2 and 18 who received primary care at a FQHC. The primary outcome studied was a visit to the ED at Ann and Robert Lurie ’s Children’s Hospital (LCH) for an acute visit related to asthma. Univariate analyses and a multiple logistic regression were performed to study the effect of demographic and clinical variables on ED utilization. Of...

We report about a case of a compassionate off-label use of the anti-interleukin-5-agent mepolizumab in a ventilated patient with life-threatening asthma attack in eosinophilic asthma. The patient suffered from severe eosinophilic asthma and was transmitted to our hospital with an asthma attack and a life-threatening respiratory state under ventilation. Since high dose steroids had not yielded a sufficient respiratory improvement mepolizumab was administered subcutaneously. After administration of mepolizumab respiratory state and ventilation parameter improved significantly. Two days after administration the patient was we...

This study explored the efficacy and safety of sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) with the extracts of Dermatophagoides Farinae (D. farinae Drops) on house dust mites (HDM)-induced atopic dermatitis (AD). 239 patients with HDM-induced AD were recruited and exposure to a multi-centre, randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled clinical trials for 36 weeks, which were randomly divided into placebo and sublingual D. farinae Drops groups (high-dose, medium-dose and low-dose), respectively. Statistical analysis was performed in three groups: Full Analysis Set, Per Protocol Set and Safety Set. 48 cases have withdrawn f...

Conclusion: These data show that exposure to smoldering eucalyptus or oak smoke inhibits respiratory responses to a greater degree than peat smoke. Anti-inflammatory effects of CO may possibly contribute to smoke-induced suppression of allergic inflammatory responses. PMID: 31431109 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Morita E, Tokuyama K, Ueda Y, Koga T, Ogawa S, Nishimura H Abstract Objective: Pulmonary function and airway inflammation were investigated in stable pre- to late-adolescent asthmatics without long-term control medications and compared with those in currently medicated asthmatics. Methods: Subjects comprised 34 well-controlled asthmatic children (aged 8.1-18.0 years; group without medication). Flow volume curves before and after inhaling a β2 agonist, a bronchodilator (BD), were compared and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FENO) concentrations were measured. All patients were attack-free for a...
