Mutation Rate Heterogeneity Increases Odds of Survival in Unpredictable Environments

Matic reviews the evidence that the heterogeneity of mutation rates is very common in bacterial populations. Such heterogeneity, which can result from genetic, environmental, and stochastic effects, may increase the rate of complex adaptation without reducing the mean fitness of a population.
