Mortality by cryptococcosis in Brazil from 2000 to 2012: A descriptive epidemiological study

ConclusionsThis study is relevant because it shows the magnitude of cryptococcosis mortality linked to AIDS and removes the invisibility of a particular non-AIDS-related disease, accounting for almost 20% of all cryptococcosis deaths. It can also contribute to control and surveillance programs, beyond highlighting the urgent prioritization of early diagnosis and proper treatment to reduce the unacceptable mortality rate of this neglected mycosis in Brazil.

CONCLUSIONS: Cryptococcal ocular involvement in AIDS patients has been occasionally proved among the cases already reported. Thus, the post mortem exam is still pivotal to improve the quality of the clinical diagnosis, especially in limited-resource settings. PMID: 31676212 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Trovero AC, Mazza M, Rogé A, Rivas MC, Bordagorría X, Bruno S, Davel G Abstract Cryptococcosis is a fungal disease affecting more than one million people per year worldwide. Its main etiological agents are Cryptococcus neoformans species complex and Cryptococcus gattii species complex. Cryptococcal meningitis (CM) is considered an AIDS-defining condition. Rapid diagnosis by cryptococcal antigen assays, either the latex agglutination test (LA) or the lateral flow assay, is key to decreasing mortality due to cryptococcal disease. The aim of the study was to develop a latex agglutination reagent...

This article aims to provide a comprehensive review of the literature on cryptococcosis in the Amazon region and its future prospects. Thus, the present study searched the Scientific Electronic Library Online, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System, Virtual Health Library, PubMed, and CAPES Periodical Portal for studies on cryptococcosis in the Amazon region, with an established search period of 1999 to 2018, using the search terms "Cryptococcus," "cryptococcosis," and "Amazon" with the Boolean operator AND.  takes place on the 1st December each year. It ’s an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, to show support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate those who have died from an AIDS-related illness. Founded in 1988, World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day.Cryptococcal meningitis causes an estimated 15% of all AIDS ‐related deaths globally. The disease largely affects people with advanced HIV disease, mostly in low‐ and middle‐income countries. The high death rate in part relates to limited access to diagnostic tests for the disease and the high cost and limit...

Background: Cryptococcus neoformans is neurotropic and provokes onset of cryptococcal meningitis. In HIV/AIDS patients it is a dangerous opportunistic infection. In Europe and the United States, about 80% of the cryptococcosis cases were associated with HIV/AIDS. But in China, most of patients with cryptococcal meningitis were not HIV victims. It is unclear whether these patients have other underlying diseases except HIV/AIDS and they are mostly in immunodeficient or immunocompetent state.

LITFL • Life in the Fast Lane Medical Blog LITFL • Life in the Fast Lane Medical Blog - Emergency medicine and critical care medical education blog aka Tropical Travel Trouble 009 The diagnosis of HIV is no longer fatal and the term AIDS is becoming less frequent. In many countries, people with HIV are living longer than those with diabetes. This post will hopefully teach the basics of a complex disease and demystify some of the potential diseases you need to consider in those who are severely immunosuppressed. While trying to be comprehensive this post can not be exhaustive (as you can imagine any patient with ...

Abstract Cryptococcal meningitis is the most common central nervous system infection in the world today. It occurs primarily, but not exclusively, in immunocompromised individuals and despite substantial improvement in management of clinical events like AIDS, the numbers of cases of cryptococcosis remain very high. Unfortunately, despite several antifungal agents available for treatment, morbidity and mortality rates remain high with this fungal infection. In this Review, we will describe the treatments and strategies for success, identify the failures, and provide insights into the future developments / improveme...

AbstractPurpose of ReviewCryptococcal meningitis is the most common fungal infection of the central nervous system and the third most frequent neurological complication in AIDS patients. To understand the Argentinean epidemiology of cryptococcosis, several efforts have been made by the National Reference Laboratory in Clinical Mycology.Recent FindingsIn Argentina, reports of distribution and frequency ofCryptococcus neoformans andCryptococcus gattii isolates are scarce and very little is known about its circulating genotypes and mating types. The National Mycology Laboratory Network and the National Reference Laboratory in...
