Abstract Methadone poisoning has become more common in the pediatric population due to extensive use of methadone maintenance therapy (MMT). It is associated with decreased level of consciousness, coma, respiratory distress and cardiac intoxication. The cardiac complications have been reported to be QT prolongation, torsade de pointes, coronary artery disease, arrhythmia, stress cardiomyopathy and death. We herein report two pediatric patients with accidental methadone poisoning who developed stress cardiomyopathy and cardiac failure. The first case was a 4-yaer-old girl and the second one was an 18-month-old girl...

Nguyen, In-Hwan Lee, Yeon-Tae YuAbstractDirect methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) are emerging as clean and renewable energy sources for global-scale sustainable energy solutions. However, several limitations of the current standard catalyst (platinum supported carbon black: Pt/C) prevent their commercialization. As an effective co-catalyst, Au@CeO2 core-shell structures are greatly advantageous for getting over the remaining hurdles of Pt/C in DMFCs. Herein, we report an efficient approach f...

[HRW] Thousands of children in Kabwe, Zambia, risk lead poisoning just by playing outside because the earth and dust are so contaminated. The source is a lead and zinc mine that shut down in 1994 but was never properly cleaned up or sealed off. Lead poisoning can lead to health issues ranging from learning disabilities to seizures or even death. Philippa Stewart spoke to researcher Joanna Naples-Mitchell about the implications for families living in Kabwe -- where the soil in contaminated neighborhoods has

Publication date: September 2019Source: Journal of Catalysis, Volume 377Author(s): Yang Wu, Jianjun Chen, Wei Hu, Kun Zhao, Pengfei Qu, Puqing Shen, Ming Zhao, Lin Zhong, Yaoqiang ChenAbstractA series of ZrO2 materials were prepared by calcining ZrO2·xH2O at temperatures from 600 to 900 °C. The oxide materials were used to prepare Pd/ZrO2 catalysts coated on the monolith. Under lean conditions, the monolithic catalysts were tested for complete oxidation of CH4 in the presence and absence of water. In process of the preparation of supports, the ratio of monoclinic ZrO2 (m-ZrO2) to tetragonal ZrO2 (t-ZrO2) incre...

INTRODUCTION: Childhood adversity (CA) has been suggested as a key risk factor for suicidal behaviour, but evidence from low/middle-income countries is lacking. In Sri Lanka, CA, in the form of child maltreatment or as a consequence of maternal separation,...

We report that digoxin and related compounds activate the NLRP3 inflammasome in macrophages and cardiomyocytes at concentrations achievable during clinical use. Inflammasome activation initiates the maturation and release of the inflammatory cytokine IL-1β and the programmed cell death pathway pyroptosis in a caspase-1–dependent manner. Notably, the same fluxes of potassium and calcium cations that affect heart contraction also induce inflammasome activation in human but not murine cells. Pharmaceuticals that antagonize these fluxes, including glyburide and verapamil, also inhibit inflammasome activation by card...

Conclusions: Interinstitutional coordination should be promoted through joint meetings, and also training classes on disaster management and its implementation should be held. Moreover, up-to-date clinical protocols must be accessible to personnel, and facilities and resources needed in the disaster should be provided.
