We examined 16 review articles and 11 randomized controlled trials published in the last 5  years on the clinical efficacy of acupuncture in adults with CMP conditions. The available evidence suggests that acupuncture does have short-term pain relief benefits for patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis and chronic low back pain and is a safe and reasonable referral option. Acupunct ure may also have a beneficial role for fibromyalgia. However, the available evidence does not support the use of acupuncture for treating hip osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.SummaryThe majority of studies concluded the superi...

This study aims to examine the effect of methotrexate (MTX) on knee effusion-synovitis and pain in symptomatic patients with mid- to late-stage KOA.Methods/designThis protocol describes a multicentre randomised placebo-controlled clinical trial aiming to recruit 200 participants with mid- to late-stage symptomatic KOA and with effusion-synovitis grade of ≥ 2. Participants will be randomly allocated to the MTX group (start from 5 mg per week for the first 2 weeks and increase to 10 mg per week for the second 2 weeks and 15 mg per week for the remaining period if tolerated) or the pla...

Authors: Muñoz-García N, Cordero-Ampuero J, Madero-Jarabo R Abstract Aims: The aim of this study is to analyze the diagnostic value of weight-bearing radiographs, magnetic resonance images (MRI), and the combination of both in osteoarthritic knees when using arthroscopic findings as the "gold standard" to compare with. Methods: A total of 59 patients were studied because of chronic pain in 1 of their knees. Radiographs were classified according to Kellgren-Lawrence scale. Magnetic resonance images were classified according to Vallotton, and arthroscopic findings according to Outerbridge ...

This study will be performed and reported in accordance with the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational studies in Epidemiology checklist. We reviewed patients diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis at our academic center from 2016 to 2017. This retrospective cohort study was approved by the institutional review board in Ruijin Hospital. The primary outcome measure was pain on movement measured by a 100-cm visual analog scale. The secondary outcome measures included the Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis Index, range of motion, and adverse effects. Statistical analysis was performed using Statistical ...

We report that electrical stimulation (ES) stimulation of post-stroke aged rats led to an improved functional recovery of spatial long-term memory (T-maze), but not on the rotating pole or the inclined plane, both tests requiring complex sensorimotor skills. Surprisingly, ES had a detrimental effect on the asymmetric sensorimotor deficit. Histologically, there was a robust increase in the number of doublecortin-positive cells in the dentate gyrus and SVZ of the infarcted hemisphere and the presence of a considerable number of neurons expressing tubulin beta III in the infarcted area. Among the genes that were unique...

CONCLUSION: Although many factors affecting the AC joint were common to instability and OA pathology, several factors appear to be unique to each and do not appear in existing AC joint metrics. These symptoms and patient-centered outcomes may be used by clinicians in the assessment of patients with AC pathology and in the development of rehabilitation programs. Implications for rehabilitation A thorough understanding of symptoms and patient-centred outcomes associated with acromio-clavicular arthritis and instability is necessary in order to conduct an accurate clinical assessment and design an effective rehabilitation pro...

AbstractMetalloproteinases were first identified as collagen cleaving enzymes and are now appreciated to play important roles in a wide variety of biological processes. The aberrant activity and dysregulation of the metalloproteinase family are linked to numerous diseases including cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, chronic wounds, cancer, fibrosis and arthritis. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent age-related joint disorder that causes pain and disability, but there are no disease-modifying drugs available. The hallmark of OA is loss of articular cartilage and elevated activities of matrix-degrading metalloprote...

AbstractBackground Arthritis is a common chronic joint disease. It progressively causes joint pain, stiffness, and disability. Glucosamine sulfate has been shown to be an effective symptom-relieving biological agent. Pharmaceutical care, including patient counseling, is very important to overcome inconsistencies in compliance and adherence. Objective The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of pharmaceutical care on the efficacy and safety of transdermal glucosamine sulfate and capsaicin (TGC-Plus cream) in the management of chronic joint pain.Settings A rheumatology outpatient clinic, Jordan University Hospital, Amm...
