Nailing of lower extremity fractures

The Gerhard Kuentscher Society was founded from surgeons convinced and dedicated to the ideas of intramedullary fixation of fractures. Kuentscher was not the first to try the intramedullary fixation but he brought it to the level of a general scientific discussion and wide application. However, if we think at the technical standards then, lack of fluoroscopy, lack of nail locking options and the need of wide reaming for self-blocking of the nail in the medullary canal, one could argue that it was still an experimental therapy compared with the current state of the art of intramedullary nailing for long bone fracture fixation.
