Officials: 8 Wisconsin Teens Sickened After Vaping

Eight Wisconsin teenagers required hospitalization last month after using vaping products, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. The teens, who lived in Milwaukee, Waukesha, and Winnebago counties, became ill after vaping in the weeks and months prior to their July hospitalization, officials said. Their symptoms first included a cough, shortness of breath, and, fatigue. Other symptoms reported by some included fever, anorexia, chest pain, nausea, and diarrhea, said Dr. Jonathan Meiman, chief medical officer for the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. Some of the teens required intubation, but they improved with steroid treatment, he said. The names and types of vaping products is not known, but Meiman said state health officials continue to investigate. Healthcare providers are being urged report similar cases to their local public health officer.
