Epidemiological burden of meningococcal disease in Latin America: A systematic literature review

Neisseria meningitidis is a common cause of invasive bacterial disease worldwide (Brehony and Jolley, 2007; S áfadi et al., 2017). The disease can occur sporadically, with seasonal variations and outbreaks (Sáfadi et al., 2014a) and often occurs suddenly, rapidly progressing to death (Stephens, 2007). N. meningitidis is also frequently found in asymptomatic carriers (Schubert-Unkmeir, 2017). Invasive meni ngococcal disease (IMD) is caused by N. meningitidis invasion into the human bloodstream, which can result in meningococcemia and septic shock, purpura fulminans, meningococcal meningitis (MM), pneumonia, arthritis, and pericarditis (Gabutti et al., 2015; Pelton, 2016).
